Aedan Borges and Benji Baptiste carry Case and Old Rochester into the Division 6 quarterfinals

Case won its first playoff game since 1992 and Old Rochester its fifth straight win. Both are listed for Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. on MaxPreps; the MIAA has not posted a date, time or site, and if both teams win they meet in a state semifinal.

By the SC360 Sports Desk | Published Nov. 7, 2026 | Last verified Nov. 7, 2026, 7:17 p.m. ET

SWANSEA Aedan Borges scored all six Joseph Case touchdowns at Fairhaven and Benji Baptiste ran for three at Old Rochester on Thursday, Nov. 5, and the South Coast still has two football teams alive in the Division 6 tournament.

No. 11 Case (7-2) goes to No. 3 Abington (7-2) and No. 7 Old Rochester (8-1) goes to unbeaten No. 2 Hudson (9-0) in the Round of 8, both on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., by the four schools' MaxPreps schedules. The MIAA's Division 6 bracket still listed no date, time or site for either game Saturday evening.

Case's 42-37 win over the defending champions was its first playoff win since 1992, the Boston Globe reported, and Old Rochester's 41-14 win over Bay Path was its fifth straight win. The two schools sit on the same half of the bracket, so if the Cardinals and the Bulldogs both win on Friday, the South Coast gets a state semifinal of its own.

Borges, with the ball in his hands

Fairhaven coach Derek Almeida described what his team faced in an email to South Coast 360 the morning after Case ended the Blue Devils' tournament run: Case is "a very good football team with a top player in the state with the ball in his hands all the time."

That player is Borges, No. 2, a senior captain whom the Globe calls a quarterback, while Case's own MaxPreps roster lists him at running back and free safety, and he kicks for the Cardinals as well. He came into the playoffs with 1,352 rushing yards, 1,098 passing yards and 24 total touchdowns, the Globe reported, then ran for 182 yards and scored all six Case touchdowns at Fairhaven. That makes 1,534 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns in nine games, by our math from the Globe's figures.

The last of those six decided the game, after Fairhaven faced fourth down at its own 38 with about seven minutes left and the ball came loose, by the Globe's account and the Scoretracker the Fairhaven scorekeeper kept on MaxPreps. Borges picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown, and Case ran in the two-point try for a 42-31 lead. "I was playing the pitch and the ball just popped right into my hands," Borges told the Globe.

"Freshman year, we knew this would be a good group," he said. "We all bought in and this is what comes out of it. It was a great win."

Coach Mike Cloutier, in his first season, went further. "[Borges] bought into everything we've been preaching," he told the Globe. "The other kids follow him and what he did tonight wasn't human. This, tonight, was the most amazing win of my life."

The Globe named Borges a Player of the Week four times this fall. Against Tri-County on Sept. 24 he threw for 187 yards, ran for 133, made seven tackles and an interception, kicked a 42-yard field goal and made all four extra points, and against Seekonk on Oct. 9 he ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 135 yards and a third. At Fairhaven on Oct. 16 he threw for 262 yards, ran for 158, accounted for five touchdowns and made 11 tackles in a 45-37 loss, and against Sharon on Oct. 30 he piled up 400 total yards and four touchdowns, the Globe reported.

The Cardinals around him

Junior Anderson Emard, No. 14, a receiver and free safety, returned two fumbles for touchdowns, of 83 and 43 yards, in a 35-8 win at West Bridgewater on Oct. 23, and finished with nine tackles and a forced fumble, the Globe reported. Junior running back Brett Silva, No. 25, ran for 121 yards at 7.6 yards a carry against Southeastern on Sept. 18, by MaxPreps' report built from the team's statistics. The Globe named both juniors as players to watch before the season.

Senior captains Cooper Bert, No. 4, a tight end and outside linebacker, and Cole Rego, No. 5, a middle linebacker and tight end, were the players the Globe said Case would lean on in the passing game, and Bert leads the receivers in the statistics Case has entered on MaxPreps. Senior Matt Bogdan, No. 10, a receiver and cornerback, ran for 72 yards and a touchdown in the 64-0 win over Bourne and has an interception, by MaxPreps' reports from the team's statistics, and junior tight end and defensive end Troy Medas, No. 34, has a touchdown catch.

Up front, Case's roster lists seniors Cameron Garcia, No. 66, at guard and tackle, Kaiser Shahdan, No. 72, at tackle and Gavin Vital, No. 75, at guard and defensive tackle, with senior defensive ends Malakai Dowling, No. 8, and Noah Cabral, No. 16. That defense allowed 99 points in eight regular-season games, with shutouts of Tri-County and Bourne.

How Case got here

Cloutier came to Swansea in February after one season at Falmouth and five at Dedham, the New England Football Journal and the Enterprise of Falmouth reported, and 55 players came out for camp, the Globe's preseason preview said. "We had such a strong summer," he told the Globe on Thursday night.

The Cardinals lost their opener to Diman 12-7, then won six of their last seven regular-season games, losing only 45-37 at Fairhaven on Oct. 16 after scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter. They closed the regular season with wins at West Bridgewater and Sharon and went into the tournament as the No. 11 seed, the team the Globe picked as the Division 6 sleeper.

"We knew after three weeks ago that we could fight with [Fairhaven]," Cloutier told the Globe after the rematch, which Case won despite being outgained 540-265, by the Globe's count. Case trailed 19-7 early in the second quarter and outscored the Blue Devils 35-18 from there. "No disrespect to Fairhaven, they're a great team and they're well coached," he said, "but we were just sick of Fairhaven."

Our full game story: Case ends unbeaten Fairhaven's title defense, 42-37.

Baptiste and the Bulldogs on the ground

Baptiste, a junior running back, ran 16 times for 123 yards against Bay Path and scored on runs of 7, 4 and 47 yards, by the scoring summary and statistics Old Rochester coach Bryce Guilbeault sent. That gives him 24 touchdowns this fall and 1,219 yards in the six games with published totals, by our math from the Globe, Standard-Times and coach's figures.

He ran for 273 yards and five touchdowns against Bishop Fenwick on Oct. 16 and 257 yards and three touchdowns at Somerset Berkley on Oct. 30, the Standard-Times and the Globe reported, and both nights made him a Globe Player of the Week. At Dartmouth on Sept. 24 he carried 33 times for 204 yards and scored the tying touchdown with 23 seconds left before the extra point won it 13-12. "That wasn't just me," Baptiste told the Globe that night. "That's our team and that was the line blocking too." He also holds the school record in the 55 meters, the Globe reported.

Junior quarterback Connor Nelson ran nine times for 121 yards and a touchdown against Bay Path. "We preach patience on offense," Guilbeault said in an email, adding that Nelson "had a terrific night orchestrating the offense" and "understands what defenses are trying to take away." Nelson ran for 131 yards against Fenwick and 99 against Bishop Stang, by the Standard-Times count, and threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to tight end Wyatt Churchill at Somerset Berkley.

Senior fullback Matt Tobin, a captain, scored the 6-yard touchdown that followed Old Rochester's goal-line stand against Bay Path, a week after he ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns at Somerset Berkley, the Standard-Times reported. Jermaine Boardman scored from 7 yards and ran in a two-point try on Thursday.

On defense, Logan Hiles had two sacks against Stang and returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown against Fenwick, the Standard-Times reported, and captain Owen Pelland won the Standard-Times readers' poll for SouthCoast preseason defensive player of the year.

"The defense really stiffened up inside the 20 yard line," Guilbeault said in an email about the stand that kept Bay Path out of the end zone on first and goal. "Bend but don't break mentality."

How Old Rochester got here

A year ago the Bulldogs opened 0-4, then won a first-round game at Wilmington 47-39 in three overtimes as the 13th seed before Hudson ended the run in the quarterfinals, the Globe reported. This fall they went 7-1, losing only to Foxborough, 35-14, on Oct. 2, and went 3-0 to finish first in the South Coast Conference Blue, by their MaxPreps schedule. With Thursday's win they have won at least one tournament game in each of the last six MIAA tournaments they played.

Guilbeault is in his eighth season, and his father, assistant coach Paul Guilbeault, is back on the sideline in his 47th season after a heart transplant in November 2025, the Standard-Times reported. "He's our drive. We work for him," senior captain Hunter Horsey told the paper.

Our full game story: Benji Baptiste scores three times as Old Rochester turns away Bay Path 41-14.

Abington: a quarterback with weapons

Abington has scored 300 points in nine games, about 33 a game, and scored 40 or more five times, by the results on its MaxPreps schedule (our math). Its losses came against No. 1 Norwell, 42-14, on Oct. 1, and Milford, 28-14, on Oct. 16, and it has won three straight. Coach Ed Reilly is in his third season, and the Green Wave came into this season as back-to-back South Shore League champions, the Globe's preseason preview said.

Senior quarterback Jack Reilly had 1,200 passing yards and 15 total touchdowns in the regular season, the Globe reported, then threw for 192 yards and four touchdowns to three receivers in a 46-28 win over No. 14 Wilmington on Thursday. The Globe's playoff preview also credits the Green Wave's slot back with 1,150 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns, and it named Abington, with Hudson and Fairhaven, as the threats to top seed Norwell.

Hudson: unbeaten, and a familiar opponent

Hudson has outscored opponents 331-117 in nine games, and every win has come by at least 12 points, by its MaxPreps schedule (our math). The Hawks went 4-0 to finish first in their Midland-Wachusett league. Senior quarterback Logan Dome came into the playoffs with 1,289 passing yards, 556 rushing yards and 29 total touchdowns, the Globe reported.

The two teams share one opponent this fall, Bishop Fenwick, which Old Rochester beat 53-18 in October and Hudson beat 35-14 in Thursday's first round. It is also a rematch of the quarterfinal Hudson won last fall, and Hudson beat Fairhaven in the 2024 Division 6 final.

How to watch or get there

The MIAA's bracket announcement says the brackets will be updated with date, time and site information as it is finalized, and the Round of 8 is played at the higher seed's field, so both games are at Abington and Hudson; Abington played its first-round game at Memorial Field and Hudson at Hudson High School.

Round of 8 tickets cost $11.50 each with fees included and are sold online only through GoFan, by the MIAA's fall ticket price list and bracket announcement. Hudson's NFHS Network page lists "Old Rochester vs. Hudson" for streaming by subscription, though at noon rather than the 7 p.m. the schools' schedules give. We will update this story when the MIAA posts the times and sites.

What comes next

Semifinal tickets cost $13.60 on the same MIAA price list. Whatever happens Friday, both teams have Thanksgiving morning games on Thursday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m.: Case at Somerset Berkley and Apponequet at Old Rochester's David S. Hagan Stadium in Mattapoisett.

Every South Coast final is on the Friday Night Scoreboard, and every South Coast playoff game is in our bracket story.
