Corrections policy and log

When we get something wrong we fix it in the open, say what changed and when, and list it here. Nothing is quietly edited or deleted.

Our corrections policy

Accuracy comes before speed. If a reader, a source or one of our own checks shows that a published story, reel, post or newsletter item is wrong, we fix it, say so where the error appeared, and list it in the log below.

Four kinds of change, each labeled

Kinds of change and what each label means
LabelWhen we use it
CorrectionA fact was wrong: a name, number, date, quote or place. The note says what was wrong and what is right.
ClarificationThe fact was accurate but the wording could mislead. The note says what we made clearer.
UpdateNew facts arrived after publication, such as a vote, amended minutes or a new document. The note carries the date and the source.
Editor's noteWe added context that belongs on the page, such as a disclosure or a link to a related story.

How fast

  • We read every error report and answer it, with a plain yes, no or "we are still checking."
  • When an error is confirmed, the story is fixed first and the log is updated the same day.
  • The dated note stays on the story for as long as the story is on the site.

What we do not do

  • Change a published fact without a dated note.
  • Delete a published story to hide a mistake. We unpublish only for a legal reason or to protect someone's safety, and when we do, a notice stays at the same address saying so.
  • Give a sponsor, a source or an official a separate path for corrections. Everyone uses the same address and gets the same standard.

Reels, posts and the newsletter

A reel with an error that matters to the story is replaced with a corrected version, and a pinned comment says what changed. A newsletter item is corrected in the next issue and in the web copy on the day we learn of it. Social captions are edited or replaced, with a reply that names the correction.

Photos of young people

If a parent or guardian asks us to take down a photo of a minor, it comes down within hours, no questions asked. We list the removal here without naming the child.
