Fairhaven opens its title defense against Case, the only team to score more than 28 on the Blue Devils this fall
Fairhaven graduated 10 of 11 offensive starters, the Boston Globe reported, and still outscored opponents 328-105 by the schools' posted scores. It has beaten Case six straight times since 2021, 255-59 combined. The rematch is Thursday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Division 6 Round of 16.
FAIRHAVEN Updated 12:19 p.m. Nov. 5, 2026.
Fairhaven has played eight football games this fall and allowed more than 28 points once. That came Oct. 16, when Joseph Case put 37 on the Blue Devils at their own stadium and lost 45-37 on a touchdown with 21 seconds left. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the defending Division 6 state champions start their title defense against that same Case team, at home, at 6:30 p.m.
Fairhaven is 8-0, the No. 6 seed in the MIAA's Division 6 tournament and the South Coast Conference Gold champion, and it has won 15 straight games dating to last season, by our count from its schedules. Case is 6-2 and seeded 11th, and the Boston Globe picked the Cardinals as the sleeper of the division. The Globe made Norwell a slight favorite and named Hudson, Abington and Fairhaven as threats. Fairhaven won the title in 2023 and 2025 and lost the 2024 final to Hudson.

Records and seeds come from the MIAA's bracket and final power rankings, and the points, shutouts and common-opponent marks are our count from the schedules both schools post on Arbiter Live. League marks and Case's receiving and interception lines are from MaxPreps, where Case's own statistics stop at Oct. 18. Almeida's record is the Globe's preseason 55-13 plus this fall's 8-0, season player numbers are from the Globe's Nov. 1 playoff preview, and the kicking lines come from the Standard-Times and Globe game reports.
What the numbers say
Fairhaven scores more, and Case allows a little less. The Blue Devils topped 40 points five times, and the Cardinals topped 30 six times. Leave out the game against each other and Fairhaven allowed 68 points in seven games, 9.7 a game, while Case allowed 54 in seven, 7.7 a game, by our count.
Against the three opponents both teams played, Case has the better results. Fairhaven won 42-0 at Bourne, 22-13 at home against West Bridgewater and 56-28 at Seekonk. Case beat Bourne 64-0 and Seekonk 39-14 at home and won 35-8 at West Bridgewater. Against those three, Case's margin was 116 points and Fairhaven's was 79, by the posted scores.
The MIAA's power rating sees it the other way. Its formula adds a team's average margin, capped at 14 points a game, to the average rating of its opponents. Fairhaven's 12.63 average margin and Case's 8.88 both sit on schedules the MIAA rates below zero, Fairhaven's at minus 5.95 and Case's at minus 6.60, which is why an unbeaten champion is seeded sixth and a 6-2 team 11th. Among the top eight seeds, Abington, Stoneham and Norwell played the toughest schedules and Fairhaven the easiest, by the same table.
How Fairhaven rebuilt a champion
Last Dec. 4 at Gillette Stadium, third-seeded Fairhaven ran for 410 yards, 226 of them after halftime, and beat top-seeded Norwell 28-14 for the Division 6 title, the Globe reported. It was the program's fifth Super Bowl title, after 1991, 1994, 2000 and a 26-22 win over Salem in the 2023 state final, by the MIAA's records, and its third straight trip to the final.
Then most of that offense graduated, as the 2025 team lost its top four ball carriers, its entire offensive line, its quarterback and its top receiver, the Globe reported from the first day of practice on Aug. 24. Senior Carter Frates was the only offensive starter back. The new line is built around four seniors who spent the title season behind the starters, Samuel McMullen, Nicholas DeAlmeida, Mikyle Hart and Cian Piehl, the Globe reported. "Those kids were understudies," Almeida told the Globe in October. "They didn't get a chance to play last year but they were competing against elite players in practice and they've led us this year."
Just over two hours into that first practice, Hart pulled off his helmet and shouted, "Football! We're back baby!" the Globe reported. "We have a lot to prove," senior running back Aidan Donnelly said that day. "I think we're better than people think. A lot of us are going to step up."
Fairhaven hired Derek Almeida in August 2020 from Falmouth, where his 2016 team went unbeaten and won the Division 2A Super Bowl, the Globe reported at the time. His father, Dana, led Fairhaven to three Super Bowls in 18 seasons as head coach, and Derek was a two-year varsity starter for the Blue Devils in 1997 and 1998. He took over a program without a winning record since 2012 and brought the triple option with him. Last December the New England Patriots named him their high school Coach of the Year. "To me, it's a team award," Almeida told WBSM. "Our coaches, our kids, our administration, everyone has put in so much work for so many years."
The season, game by game
Fairhaven opened Sept. 11 with a 39-7 home win over Somerset Berkley. A week later it won 35-13 at Plymouth North, where junior Jackson Williams ran for 102 yards on eight carries, scored on a 21-yard run and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass, and senior Liam Pickup ran four times for 146 yards, the Standard-Times reported. A 42-0 win at Bourne on Thursday, Sept. 24, made 10 straight wins across two seasons, by MaxPreps' count.
West Bridgewater, which forced three turnovers to beat Fairhaven 47-43 in 2025, came to Fairhaven on Oct. 2 and led 13-0 in the second quarter, the Globe reported. Fairhaven scored the next 22 points and won 22-13, and its last touchdown capped a 19-play drive that began late in the third quarter in a steady rain. On third and goal from the 15, Almeida called a reverse to junior Elliott Grant, who reached the ball across the goal line as he was upended, the Globe reported. "That's my favorite play. When I heard it in the huddle, my ears lit up," Grant said. "Every inch matters."
Junior quarterback Jackson Ponte threw for 192 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-7 win over Uxbridge on Oct. 9, and Frates caught three touchdown passes, by the Globe's weekly leaders list. Against Case a week later, junior Maddox Joseph ran for three touchdowns, on runs of 2, 27 and 1 yards, and Ponte ran for 67 yards and went 5 of 9 for 87, the Standard-Times reported. Joseph and Donnelly each topped 100 rushing yards in both papers' counts and combined for four touchdowns, and Donnelly broke a 76-yard run, by the Globe's count. Fairhaven led 16-7 at halftime and 29-14 after three quarters before Case scored 23 points in the fourth, by the MaxPreps line score. Pickup returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown in the first half and then ran 18 yards for the winning score with 21 seconds left, the first two varsity touchdowns of his career, the Globe and the Standard-Times reported.
A 56-28 win at Seekonk on Oct. 23 clinched the conference title. Ponte went 10 of 12 for 221 yards and five touchdown passes, a school single-game record, and ran five times for 57 yards, the Standard-Times reported. Williams scored four times, two rushing and two receiving, with 113 yards on four carries and 55 more on three catches. Wes Amarello caught touchdown passes of 35 and 26 yards, Frates caught one from 30, Pickup ran six times for 116 yards and a score, DeAlmeida had a sack, Gavin Anderson forced a fumble with a strip sack, Jayce James recovered a fumble and Jackson Dane made all eight extra points.
The regular season ended Oct. 30 with a 47-0 shutout at Greater New Bedford. Ponte threw touchdown passes of 50 yards to Williams and 30 to Frates and ran seven times for 88 yards, Joseph scored twice, Seth Olivier and Logan St. Germain ran for touchdowns, and James returned a fumble 98 yards for a score and made 10 tackles, the Standard-Times reported. Frates and Grant intercepted passes, Frates forced a fumble, and Dane kicked five extra points.
The players who carry it
Ponte is in his first season as the starter. His 1,004 passing yards come with 16 touchdown passes and one interception, and the Globe wrote that he "has surprised Fairhaven opponents with a pass-heavy approach." Frates, the lone returning starter, has 414 receiving yards and nine touchdowns and was praised by the Globe for "elite blocking on the edge." Williams has 264 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and the two have combined for seven interceptions on defense, by the Globe's figures.
Fairhaven runs the ball by committee. Joseph has five touchdowns in the last three games, Pickup has won the Standard-Times readers' Player of the Week poll twice, and Williams has scored both rushing and receiving in two games, at Plymouth North and at Seekonk. On defense, James has two fumble recoveries in the last two games, one of them taken 98 yards, and Anderson, Olivier, Kyle Soares and DeAlmeida all made plays behind the line in the last two weeks, the Standard-Times reported.
Six straight over Case
Fairhaven has beaten Case in each of the six seasons since 2021, by both schools' schedules on MaxPreps: 24-0 at Case in 2021, 49-6 at home in 2022, 49-6 at Case in 2023, 42-0 at home in 2024 and 46-10 at Case last Oct. 30, then 45-37 this October, a combined 255-59. Case's 37 points this fall were more than the 22 it had scored in the five previous meetings combined, and the eight-point margin was the closest of the six, by our count.
"I'm extremely proud of the hard work, commitment, and preparation our players and coaches have put in since the offseason. This group has continued to build on the standard we've established within our program, but they also understand that our biggest challenges are still ahead of us. We've put ourselves in a great position, and now it's about staying focused, continuing to improve, and playing our best football when it matters most," Almeida said in an email to South Coast 360 on Thursday. "We look forward to tonight's matchup with Case, they are a tough talented opponent. We had a great week of practice in preparation and we are excited for it to show on the field."
Our read: the matchup
This is our analysis, drawn from the records above. The triple option makes a defense assign a player to the dive, the quarterback and the pitch on every snap, and an assignment missed is a long run. That is the base of an offense that averages 41 points, and this year it has a passing game on top of it. With Ponte throwing 16 touchdowns against one interception, a safety who crowds the line to stop the option leaves Frates or Williams open behind him.
The one team to beat Fairhaven in the last two seasons did it by taking the ball away. West Bridgewater forced three turnovers to win 47-43 last fall, and this year it turned a failed Fairhaven fourth down and a fumble into a 13-0 lead before Fairhaven took over, the Globe reported. Fairhaven's defense takes the ball away too: Frates and Williams have combined for seven interceptions, Pickup scored on a fumble return against Case, and James scored on one in the finale.
Case's threat is concentrated in one player. Aedan Borges, the senior wearing No. 2 on the roster Case posts on MaxPreps, threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 158 yards and three more at Fairhaven, the Globe reported. That is 420 yards and five touchdowns from one player, by our math, in a game Fairhaven won. Fairhaven's job is to keep him from repeating it while its own offense holds the ball. The game is on Fairhaven's artificial turf, a fast surface for an option offense built to get the ball to the edge, and perimeter speed was one of the two strengths the Globe listed for the Blue Devils before the season.
What Case brings
By the Globe's figures, Borges has run for 1,352 yards, thrown for 1,098 and accounted for 24 touchdowns. In the October game at Fairhaven he also made 11 tackles and went 3 for 3 on extra points, and he finished the regular season with 400 total yards and four touchdowns in a 41-14 win over Sharon/Dedham, the paper reported. Junior Anderson Emard, No. 14, returned two fumbles for touchdowns, 83 and 43 yards, in a 35-8 win at West Bridgewater, the Globe reported.
The Globe also named senior captains Cooper Bert, No. 4, and Cole Rego, No. 5, and junior running back Brett Silva, No. 25, before the season. Bert and Rego are listed at tight end and linebacker on the MaxPreps roster, and Silva averaged 65.8 rushing yards a game in Case's statistics through Oct. 18. Case has won six of its last seven. Cloutier is Case's third coach in three years and went 5-6 in his one season at Falmouth, by the Globe's preseason report, after five seasons at Dedham, the Falmouth Enterprise reported. "Defensively, we are a very strong team that can create some problems and offensively, we have a lot of different ways to attack people with the depth that we have," Cloutier told the Globe in September.
Thursday night: time, place, tickets, stream
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Fairhaven High School, 12 Huttleston Ave., by the MIAA's Division 6 bracket and both schools' schedules. The game moved up a day from the Friday date first listed. From the Round of 16 on, the MIAA sells tournament tickets only online, through GoFan, its media and ticketing page says. A Round of 16 football ticket costs $9.40, general admission, with all fees included, by the MIAA's ticket price list. The NFHS Network, which holds the digital rights to MIAA tournament games, lists a subscription stream of the game.
Buy tickets on the GoFan page for Case at Fairhaven, or start from the MIAA's media and ticketing page.
No. 3 Abington and No. 14 Wilmington meet in the Round of 16 the same night, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Fairhaven-Case winner plays the Abington-Wilmington winner in the Round of 8, at the higher seed's field, by the MIAA's bracket. Abington senior quarterback Jack Reilly has 1,200 passing yards and 15 total touchdowns, and slot back Naz Paulding has 1,150 all-purpose yards, the Globe reported. Old Rochester sits on the same half of the bracket, so two South Coast teams could meet in a state semifinal.
Donnelly, Frates, Pickup and the four senior linemen have at least one more home game after Thursday: Dartmouth visits on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. Reaching the final again would make four straight trips, and winning it would give Fairhaven its sixth Super Bowl title and its third in four seasons, by the MIAA's records. Where that final would be played is not yet set: the MIAA said Nov. 2 that Gillette Stadium, home of last year's title game, is no longer an option for this year's championships and that it is working to secure other host sites.
Thursday's final will be on the Friday Night Scoreboard, the Case side of this matchup is in our Case preview, and every South Coast playoff game is in our bracket story.
