FALL RIVER Three people were taken to hospitals after a pickup truck crashed into a home on Brayton Avenue in Fall River on Saturday, Oct. 24, Fall River EMS said in an account NBC Boston published early Sunday and the Fall River Reporter carried Saturday. Fall River police had described one injured resident.

When first responders arrived, they found one person trapped underneath the truck and a second person trapped inside the truck, according to EMS. A shift commander who was around the corner reached the scene within seconds and gave immediate aid to the person under the truck, the department said.

The rescue

Fall River firefighters, police and EMS crews responded soon after. It took fire crews about 30 to 40 minutes to free the person pinned beneath the truck, and they worked the whole time around live wires and active sparks coming from the house and the vehicle, EMS said. National Grid was called and cut all power, and EMS command pulled responders out of the house for their safety, according to the department.

One person was taken to the trauma center at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The ambulance went with a separate driver so that two paramedics could ride in the back with the patient, EMS said. The two other people were taken to local hospitals. EMS said the extent of their injuries was not known.

What police and fire officials have said

Fall River police said the Saturday morning crash trapped one of the home's residents, who was freed by firefighters and taken to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, WPRI 12 reported Saturday night. The driver was taken into custody at the scene, WPRI and the Fall River Reporter reported, and the driver's identity has not been made public. The crash remains under investigation, WPRI reported.

Firefighters carried out an extended extrication and brought the department's Technical Rescue Truck to the scene, the Fall River firefighters union said in a statement Saturday that the Fall River Reporter published. The crash caused extensive structural damage and displaced everyone who lived in the building, and power was cut remotely because the building's exterior electrical service was damaged, the union said.

The Red Cross was helping the residents find a place to stay Saturday night, WJAR NBC 10 reported.

EMS said it is unclear what caused the crash. The department used the call to remind drivers to be careful on the roads, drive the speed limit and always wear a seat belt.
