Gale watch posted for Buzzards Bay and the sounds, Monday evening to Wednesday evening
Northeast winds of 25 to 35 knots and gusts to 40 knots are possible on Buzzards Bay and the sounds from 8 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service says.
NEW BEDFORD The National Weather Service has issued a gale watch for Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound, Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay, Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound from 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Northeast winds of 25 to 35 knots, gusts up to 40 knots and seas of 4 to 7 feet are possible, according to the watch.
Strong winds can cause hazardous seas that could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility, the weather service says. The watch advises mariners to consider altering plans to avoid possible hazardous conditions.
A gale warning covers the coastal and ocean waters farther out, off Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Block Island out to 60 nautical miles, for the same hours. There the weather service expects the same winds and seas of 9 to 14 feet.
The weather service is due to update the watch and the warning by 3:30 a.m. Monday. South Coast 360 will update this story if it changes.
