Work starts Monday to add a left turn from Route 6 onto Route 105 in Marion
The job is part of a $4.1 million state safety contract that also covers Route 6 at Barney Avenue in Rehoboth. A larger rebuild of Route 6 through Marion, estimated at $14.1 million, is still in design.
MARION Drivers in Marion will see work begin Monday, Nov. 2, at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 105, where the state is changing the traffic signal to create a left turn from Route 6 onto Route 105. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's contractor, Lawrence Lynch Corp., is expected to work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and drivers should expect delays through the area and seek other routes, the Town of Marion said Thursday.
Besides the signal change, the job includes new wheelchair ramps, milling and overlay and new pavement, the town said. The schedule and the finish date can change with the weather and unforeseen conditions, and the town asked drivers to slow down and use caution in the work zone.
Part of a five-town safety contract
The Marion work is one of a set of targeted safety fixes in a single MassDOT District 5 contract, bid at $4,055,546.40 and paid for without federal aid, according to the state's project listing. MassDOT describes the Marion piece, at Route 105 and Front Street, as a short "road diet to implement an exclusive left turn on Rte 6," along with other short-term improvements. The listing says the contract's changes may include signs, pavement markings, new or improved crosswalks, signal timing and curb extensions.
The same contract covers Rehoboth, where MassDOT plans to build an island at Route 6 and Barney Avenue to stop left turns there, leaving right turns in and out. Its other locations are in Duxbury, Easton and Dennis.
MassDOT advertised the job on March 29, 2025, and issued the notice to proceed on June 4, 2025. The state's listing shows the contract 30% complete, and as of Oct. 14 the contractor had finished all of the contract's passing zone closures and one location in Duxbury, was working on Route 53 in Duxbury, and had "Rte. 6 in Marion to follow," the listing says. It gives the contract's normal hours as 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Lane closures on Route 6
MassDOT has intermittent lane closures scheduled on Route 6 in both directions between Route 105 and Route 25 in Marion starting Monday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday, with a 12-foot width limit. The same closures are also posted for Friday, Oct. 30. On Friday, I-195 has roadwork between Exit 35 (Route 105) in Marion and Route 28 in Wareham, eastbound from 9 a.m. to noon and westbound from noon to 4 p.m.
Bigger Route 6 plans still in design
MassDOT calls the intersection work a short-term safety improvement. A larger state project for the same corridor is in design: reconstruction of about 2.5 miles of Route 6 from Spring Street to River Road, and of Route 105 from Route 6 to Spring Street, with bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, rebuilt traffic signals and changes to the road's layout. The state estimates that contract at $14,139,000. Its design consultant received the notice to proceed on Jan. 25, 2023, and MassDOT's listing has no Transportation Improvement Program data for it for 2027 to 2031.
Two other Route 6 projects that reach into Marion are also in design: targeted safety improvements on Route 6 from Converse Road to Cromesett Road in Marion and Wareham, listed as pavement marking work, and replacement of the Route 6 bridges over the Weweantic River on Marion Road and Wareham Road.
