Marion dates to watch: swap shop closes Oct. 28, Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11, hazardous waste day Nov. 14
The Veterans Day luncheon at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center follows the ceremony at noon; the Council on Aging asks for an RSVP by Nov. 6.
MARION Three dates are coming up for Marion households: the swap shop closes for the season next week, the town honors its veterans on Nov. 11, and a shared hazardous waste day follows on Nov. 14.
Swap shop closes for the season Oct. 28
The Benson Brook Road Boutique, the town's swap shop inside the Marion Transfer Station at 55 Benson Brook Road, closes for the season on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. The town thanked the volunteers and residents who took part this season and said it looks forward to reopening in the spring.
The boutique is owned by the town, staffed by volunteers and maintained by the Department of Public Works. Its purpose is to keep serviceable items out of the waste stream while giving residents free access to useful items. Marion and Rochester residents with a current Transfer Station sticker may use it, and each visitor may take home up to 10 items per visit.
The shop is typically open Wednesdays during its April-to-October season, with hours dependent on volunteers. Drop-offs are accepted during operating hours only, and items must be clean, dry and in working condition; the attendant has the final say. Accepted items include household goods such as kitchenware, lamps and picture frames, lawn and garden supplies, luggage, pet supplies, sports equipment, tools, and toys, puzzles and games with no broken or missing pieces. Not accepted: books, child safety equipment, electronics, anything with gasoline, food, hazardous materials, large appliances, liquids such as paint and cleaners, mattresses, rugs and textiles.
Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11
The annual Marion Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Old Landing Veteran's Park on Front Street on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony moves into the Sippican School Multipurpose Room.
The guest speaker is the Tri-Town Veterans Service Officer, Lt. Christopher P. Gerrior, U.S. Navy, retired. The Sippican School Band, led by Jennifer Estacio, will perform selections of patriotic music.
After the ceremony, the Marion Council on Aging hosts a luncheon at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center at noon for veterans, active duty service members, spouses and guests. The council asks for an RSVP by Friday, Nov. 6, by calling 508-748-3570.
Hazardous waste day Nov. 14
Three days later, Marion and Mattapoisett share a Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marion Department of Public Works, 60 Benson Brook Road. The event is open to residents of both towns with a transfer station sticker or other proof of residency. The load limit is 10 gallons or 10 pounds, and questions go to the Marion DPW at 508-748-3540.

How we verified this
Every fact comes from the towns' own postings listed below: the swap shop final-day item and the Veterans Day item (both posted Oct. 21, 2026, read fresh that evening), the swap shop rules page, the Mattapoisett hazardous waste item and the shared 2026 flyer it links (which gives the Marion Department of Public Works address, the proof-of-residency rule, the load limit and the contact line), and the Marion hazardous waste item naming both towns. Names and titles (Lt. Christopher P. Gerrior, Jennifer Estacio) are as the town posted them. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar: Oct. 28, 2026 is a Wednesday, Nov. 6 is a Friday, Nov. 11 is a Wednesday and Nov. 14 is a Saturday. No outlet is a source for this story. Not heard: no one was contacted; the towns' postings speak for themselves.
