U.S. Marshals: Woman charged in New Bedford bar stabbing arrested in Hartford
A warrant out of New Bedford District Court was issued three days after the Oct. 10 fight. Two people were hurt, and both survived.
NEW BEDFORD A 26-year-old woman charged in a stabbing at an Acushnet Avenue bar in New Bedford last month was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Hartford, Connecticut, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Sanedlly Santana was arrested on a fugitive warrant "in connection with the stabbing of the female victim," the service said in a statement Wednesday, as The Boston Globe reported it. She faces charges of assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery. The warrant was issued Oct. 13, three days after a fight that sent a man and a woman to St. Luke's Hospital. Both "survived their injuries," the marshals said.
Assault to murder means prosecutors accuse a person of attacking someone with the intent to commit murder. Santana is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
What the police report says
Officers were called at 12:53 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, for a large fight and a stabbing at the bar, according to a New Bedford police report described by the Globe. A man was stabbed in the chest, and a woman was stabbed and cut in the neck, the report said.
At the hospital, the woman told police she had seen several men fighting, including the man who was stabbed. She said another woman pushed her as security began putting people out, and that the two then fought outside, according to the report. She told police she recognized the woman who she said assaulted her and showed officers a social media profile, which the report said carried a handle under an alias known to be Santana's.
The marshals' statement, as the Globe quoted it, ties the arrest to the stabbing of the woman. NBC 10 News reported that Santana is accused of stabbing both people.
The search
Police went to Santana's apartment later on Oct. 10 to arrest her and saw a car pull into the parking lot and quickly drive away, the report said. Police said they believed she was driving. Officers followed the car and found it abandoned a short distance away. Santana was not in it, but a card with her name and photo was, according to the report.
The Marshals Service's Massachusetts Fugitive Task Force located Santana in Hartford, NBC 10 News reported. Her arrest came 24 days after the fight and 21 days after the warrant was issued.
What happens next
Santana is being held in Connecticut on a fugitive from justice charge and will be extradited, NBC 10 News reported. She will first be arraigned on that charge in Hartford and then return to Massachusetts to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court, the Globe reported. An arraignment is the hearing where the charges are read and a plea is entered.
The Globe reported Wednesday that information about a lawyer for Santana was not immediately available. South Coast 360 does not name the two people who were hurt.
