NEW BEDFORD New Bedford police listed five arrests in their daily arrest log for Monday, Oct. 19, and each of the four approved entries is an arrest on a warrant. The log for Tuesday, Oct. 20, lists no arrests. The department posts the logs on its website the morning after each day.

This list gives the time, street and charges for each arrest, with the department's abbreviations spelled out. It does not name the people arrested. The street is the location the log gives for each arrest.

Monday, Oct. 19

Tuesday, Oct. 20

The log lists no arrests.

By the numbers

All four approved entries on Oct. 19 are warrant arrests: one person on five warrants, one on three and two on one each. The log marks each approved entry as neither a juvenile nor a domestic case, and lists each under the all-other-offenses category. Warrant arrest entries do not say what the underlying warrants charge.

About this log

State law requires every police department to keep a daily log of complaints, reported crimes and arrests, including the names and addresses of people arrested and the charges, and makes those entries public records. Responses to domestic violence, rape or sexual assault, arrests for assault, assault and battery or a protective order violation against a family or household member, arrests of anyone under 18, and entries about a handicapped person who is confined to a wheelchair, is bedridden or needs a mobility device go in a separate log that is not public, under Chapter 41, Section 98F. South Coast 360 prints less than the log does. We leave out names, house numbers, home addresses and hometowns. Both logs were generated at 7:40 a.m., the Oct. 19 log on Tuesday and the Oct. 20 log on Wednesday, the mornings after the days they cover. We read the two logs on the department's Police Logs page Wednesday afternoon.

An arrest is not a conviction. Everyone charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

How we verified this

Every entry comes from the New Bedford Police Department's daily arrest logs for Oct. 19 and 20, linked in the sources, downloaded and read Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 21. They are scanned images, so we read each one by eye from high-resolution renders. Charges are given in plain wording. The log rules come from the text of state law on the Legislature's website. We leave out names, house numbers, home addresses and hometowns. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. Not heard: no one was contacted, because this digest names no one.
