Police log: Seven New Bedford arrests on Oct. 21, including an OUI and two dangerous weapon counts

Three of the seven arrests were on warrants, one of them on four, and the log marks an Elm Street assault and battery entry as not yet approved by a supervisor.

NEW BEDFORD New Bedford police listed seven arrests in their daily arrest log for Wednesday, Oct. 21, among them an operating under the influence charge on Hathaway Road, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on County Street and three warrant arrests. The department generated the log at 7:40 a.m. Thursday.

Each entry below gives the time, street and charges as the log lists them, with the department's abbreviations spelled out. The street is the arrest location in the log, which is not always where the person lives.

By the numbers

Three of the seven entries are warrant arrests covering six warrants in all, with one person arrested on four warrants and two on one each, and the warrant entries do not say what the underlying warrants charge. The log files the two County Street counts under its aggravated assault category, the Elm Street charge under simple assault, the Hathaway Road OUI under driving under the influence, with the other two charges under traffic and town bylaw offenses, and the Pleasant Street charge under drug and narcotic violations.

The log lists every case as open, and six of the entries are marked approved; the Elm Street entry is the only one that is not. Four of the seven arrests were logged after 5 p.m., the last at 10:32 p.m. on Union Street.

About this log

State law requires every police department to keep a daily log of complaints, reported crimes and arrests, including the names and addresses of people arrested and the charges, and makes those entries public records. Responses to domestic violence, rape or sexual assault, arrests for assault, assault and battery or a protective order violation against a family or household member, arrests of anyone under 18, and entries about a person with a disability who is confined to a wheelchair, is bedridden or needs a mobility device go in a separate log that is not public, under Chapter 41, Section 98F. The public log marks all seven of its Oct. 21 entries as neither a juvenile nor a domestic case. South Coast 360 prints less than the log does and leaves out names, house numbers, home addresses and hometowns.

An arrest is not a conviction. Everyone charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Notes

Every entry comes from the New Bedford Police Department's daily arrest log for Oct. 21, linked in the sources and read Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22. It is a scanned document, so each entry was read by eye, and charges are given in plain wording. The log rules come from the text of state law on the Legislature's website. We leave out names, house numbers, home addresses, hometowns and warrant numbers. Not heard: no one was contacted, because this digest names no one.
