NEW BEDFORD New Bedford police listed 22 arrests in their daily arrest logs for Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25, among them two Friday morning arrests on Hemlock Street, a minute apart, on animal cruelty charges and a Sunday night arrest on Airport Road for assault with a dangerous weapon. Nine of the 22 were arrests on warrants alone.

Friday's log was the busiest of the three, with 13 arrests, while Saturday's listed six and Sunday's listed three. The department generated each log at 7:40 a.m. the morning after the day it covers.

Each entry below gives the time, street and charges as the log lists them, with the department's abbreviations spelled out. The street is the arrest location in the log, which is not always where the person lives.

Saturday, Oct. 24

Sunday, Oct. 25

By the numbers

The 22 entries carry 47 charges in all, with 28 on Friday, 15 on Saturday and four on Sunday. The nine warrant entries list the warrant itself as the offense. Three of the people arrested Friday were each arrested on two warrants, so those nine arrests account for 12 warrant counts.

Three Friday arrests carried drug charges, and the Elm Street arrest lists two counts of distributing a Class B drug, one of them as a subsequent offense, along with a conspiracy count. The William Street arrest lists a Class B possession count, a conspiracy count and a charge of possessing ammunition without a firearms identification card. The Pleasant Street arrest adds a Class D intent to distribute count to two motor vehicle charges.

Assault and battery on a police officer appears in two entries, the 12:57 a.m. Friday arrest on Maywood Street and the 5:29 a.m. Saturday arrest on Maxfield Street, which lists two counts.

Three entries are not marked as approved in the logs: Friday's 2:17 p.m. arrest on Pleasant Street and Saturday's two arrests on Coggeshall Street, at 4:50 p.m. and 5:32 p.m. The logs list every case as open. None of the 22 is marked as a juvenile or domestic case, and state law puts those arrests in a separate log, described below.

About this log

State law requires every police department to keep a daily log of complaints, reported crimes and arrests, including the names and addresses of people arrested and the charges, and makes those entries public records. Responses to domestic violence, rape or sexual assault, arrests for assault, assault and battery or a protective order violation against a family or household member, arrests of anyone under 18, and entries about a person with a disability who is confined to a wheelchair, is bedridden or needs a mobility device go in a separate log that is not public, under Chapter 41, Section 98F. South Coast 360 prints less than the log does and leaves out names, house numbers, home addresses and hometowns.

The department's log for Thursday, Oct. 22, listed five arrests, including a South Street arrest on seven charges (Police log, Oct. 22). For what can happen to a driver's license after an OUI arrest, see our explainer on license suspensions after an OUI arrest in Massachusetts.

An arrest is not a conviction. Everyone charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Notes

Every entry comes from the New Bedford Police Department's daily arrest logs for Oct. 23, 24 and 25, linked in the sources and read Monday afternoon, Oct. 26. They are scanned documents, so each entry was read by eye, and charges are given in plain wording. The log rules come from the text of state law on the Legislature's website. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. We leave out names, house numbers, home addresses, hometowns and warrant numbers. Not heard: this digest names no one, so no one was asked for comment.
