Updated Oct. 18 with more detail.

SOMERSET The Somerset Berkley Regional School Committee will consider accepting a $50,000 donation from Breaking Bread "to Purchase YouScience Program" when it meets Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to the committee's posted agenda. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the library at Somerset Berkley Regional High School, 625 County St., Somerset.

The agenda, revised Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m., does not describe the donor, the program or what it would cost the district after the gift. No agenda packet or backup documents are posted with it on the town's Agenda Center. A second gift is also listed: a Yamaha clarinet and a flute from the David M. Moraes Foundation. The committee's notice says "Every Agenda Item May Require Action."

The money items

Under financial matters, the committee will hear the September financial statement and a year-end review of the fiscal 2026 budget. It is set to act on setting up a Class of 2030 student activity account and a transportation revolving fund, an item the revised agenda highlights. A third item, prepayment of special education tuitions, is struck through on the revised agenda.

The committee will also consider a memorandum of agreement with administrative assistants for Aug. 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029. It will also decide whether executive session minutes from 2022 to 2026 should be released in full, released with more information unredacted, or kept as redacted.

Policy and state positions

The committee will take up the first reading of a life-threatening allergy policy, coded JLC-1, and will "Consider Waiving the Second Reading," which would let it adopt the policy the same night, according to the agenda.

Members will also decide whether to support, oppose or amend proposed resolutions of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. The five new ones cover safe zones, vocational and technical seats on the state education board and the School Building Authority board, seclusion standards in emergency behavior response, and letting regional committees tap special education reserve funds by majority vote. Three earlier resolutions are up for renewal, on transportation bidding, funding for the METCO program and School Building Authority aid.

The superintendent's update

Superintendent Jeffrey Schoonover is scheduled to report on corrections for findings from an Integrated Monitoring Review, bus routes and professional development. The agenda also lists an update to the student and family handbook and a closed session on bargaining with the Somerset Teachers Association.

How to weigh in

The agenda sets a public input period on agenda topics before the financial items. Kimberly Ferreira chairs the seven-member committee. People who need accommodations to take part should call ADA coordinator Robin Vaccaro at 508-324-3100, ext. 3215, ahead of the meeting, the notice says. The next regular meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in the same library.

How we verified this

Every fact comes from the committee's posted Oct. 20 agenda, read in full from the page images, and its Agenda Center listing, above. We read them on Oct. 18. We found no packet, backup documents or recent minutes posted, and no public record that describes the donor or the program, so the story says only what the agenda says. We left out the names of students and of new hires listed on the agenda. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. Not heard: no one was contacted. Questions for the superintendent about the gift are pending through our newsroom.
