Bristol County gas averages $4.04 a gallon, about $1.20 more than last fall
A 15-gallon fill-up at the Seekonk-area average costs about $18 more than it did a year ago. Diesel is up about $2.50 a gallon.
SOUTH COAST Regular gas averaged $4.04 a gallon in Bristol County on Thursday, Oct. 29, and $4.10 in Plymouth County, according to AAA. Prices at the pump have slipped through October, but drivers in the region are still paying about $1.20 a gallon more than they did a year ago.
The Massachusetts average for regular was $4.20, down from $4.21 on Wednesday, $4.24 a week ago and $4.39 a month ago, AAA reported. A year ago it was $2.99. Of the seven Massachusetts metro areas AAA tracks, the only one in Bristol County is Seekonk, where regular averaged $4.04, down from $4.27 a month ago and up from $2.82 a year ago.
What a fill-up costs
At the Seekonk-area average, 15 gallons of regular costs about $60.58, compared with about $42.29 at last year's price, or roughly $18.30 more per fill-up. Mid-grade averaged $4.67 there and premium $5.08.
Diesel has climbed further, averaging $6.21 a gallon in the Seekonk market, against $3.67 a year ago, and $6.33 statewide, against $3.81, a rise of about $2.50 a gallon in both.
How the South Coast compares
Bristol County had the second-lowest county average in Massachusetts on Thursday, behind only Hampden County at $4.03, according to AAA. Barnstable County was at $4.26, Dukes County at $5.46 and Nantucket at $5.79, the highest in the state.
Drivers who cross into Rhode Island will not find cheaper gas on average. Rhode Island's average for regular was $4.12, about 8 cents above Bristol County's, though down from $4.38 a month ago, according to AAA.
Why prices are not falling faster
The national average fell 5 cents over the past week to $4.22, AAA said Thursday, but crude oil above $100 a barrel is limiting further declines at the pump. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $2.88 on Wednesday to settle at $102.78 a barrel, AAA said. A year ago the national average was $3.04.
Gasoline demand fell last week to 8.38 million barrels a day from 8.98 million, while total domestic gasoline supply rose to 209.2 million barrels from 205.3 million, AAA said, citing Energy Information Administration data.
The state House voted down a 60-day suspension of the 24-cent-a-gallon state gas tax on Oct. 21, as SC360 reported. Home heating is costly too: heating oil held at $6.25 a gallon statewide this week, and the state has announced winter relief for electric and oil heat customers.
A reminder for the weekend
With Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31, and daylight saving time ending Sunday, Nov. 1, AAA urged drivers to slow down, put distractions away and watch carefully at crosswalks and in neighborhoods, since more pedestrians will be out and evenings will turn dark earlier.

Notes
Every price comes from AAA: its Massachusetts and Rhode Island average pages, its Massachusetts county figures and its national release of Oct. 29, all read on Oct. 29. AAA's prices are averages for regular unleaded unless another grade is named. The fill-up costs and the changes over time are our arithmetic from AAA's figures. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. The gas tax vote, the heating oil price and the winter relief come from SC360's own earlier stories.
