TAUNTON Updated 6:05 a.m. Nov. 5, 2026.

Route 140 closes in both directions in Taunton from 8 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday between its Exit 19 and U.S. Route 44, at the Route 24 interchange, MassDOT's Mass511 listings show.

The ramps from Route 24 onto Route 140 close over the same hours: the Route 24 southbound exit ramp at Exit 17 and the Route 24 northbound ramp to Route 140 north at Exit 17B.

MassDOT scheduled the same Route 140 closure and the same two ramp closures for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights this week, its listings showed Tuesday, so Thursday is the third night and the last one listed. The listing posted Thursday morning ends at 4 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, and shows no later nights.

Getting around it

The Mass511 listings do not name a detour. Route 24 itself is not listed as closed. On Route 24, MassDOT lists some lanes closed in both directions between Exit 16 and Exit 20 at U.S. Route 44 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., with an 11-foot width limit, and some southbound lanes closed between Exit 22 at Interstate 495 in Raynham and Exit 17 from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., with a 12-foot limit.

MassDOT also lists roadwork on Route 44 westbound between Route 24 near Raynham and Route 140 from midnight to 4 a.m. Friday.

Mass511 shows the closures, live traffic and cameras at mass511.com and in its mobile app.

The interchange rebuild

Mass511 lists the closure as nighttime roadwork. The closed stretch of Route 140 runs through its interchange with Route 24, which MassDOT is rebuilding under project 605888. MassDOT's project record describes that project as interchange improvements including replacement of the Route 24 bridge over Route 140, with a ramp system that "will be modified to improve vehicular flow to and from each limited access highway."

MassDOT's latest status update on the project, dated Oct. 28, lists crews installing barrier in the Route 140 median, demolishing the second phase of the abutments at the bridge that carries Route 24 over Route 140, starting a footing at one of the Route 24 rail bridges and relocating a stream near one of the ramps. The record lists a construction bid price of $116.5 million and the construction contract as 50% complete.

When the work is done, MassDOT's project page says, the interchange will have a new off-ramp from Route 24 southbound to Route 140 northbound and two-lane entrance ramps from Route 140 to Route 24. Route 140 is being widened with a new southbound bypass lane between the Route 24 ramps and more turning lanes, and its traffic signals are being upgraded or replaced. The project also replaces the Route 24 bridges over the Middleborough Secondary rail line and the commuter rail line, and the Cotley culvert on Route 140.

The City of Taunton's road construction page says the project works shifts from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and that it is "expected to be ongoing until completion, anticipated for June 2027."

Daytime work and the weekend

Thursday and Friday during the day, MassDOT lists lane closures that come and go on Route 24 southbound between Exit 20 and Exit 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Route 24 northbound between Exit 16 and Exit 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It lists the same kind of closures on Route 140 northbound between Exit 16 at Route 79 and Exit 20 at Route 24, and on Route 44 in both directions between Route 140 and Route 24, each from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Over the weekend, MassDOT lists roadwork on Route 44 in both directions between Route 104 in Taunton and Route 24 in Raynham from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8.

The project's history, including the 2023 contractor change, is in SC360's story on the interchange rebuild, and the rest of this week's South Coast closures are in the roadwork story for the week of Nov. 2.

Notes

Every closure comes from MassDOT's Mass511 listings, which we read Thursday, Nov. 5 at 5:27 a.m. and again at 6:05 a.m. and kept with their event numbers; the Tuesday through Thursday schedule comes from the same event numbers as MassDOT listed them Nov. 3. Project facts come from MassDOT's project record, with the status MassDOT dated Oct. 28, and from MassDOT's project page; the work shifts and the June 2027 date come from the City of Taunton's road construction page. We read all of them Nov. 5. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar: Nov. 3 is a Tuesday, Nov. 5 a Thursday, Nov. 6 a Friday, Nov. 7 a Saturday and Nov. 8 a Sunday. Not heard: MassDOT's Highway Division press office, asked Nov. 1 about the purpose of this week's night closures.
