Dartmouth water repair closes a State Road lane near Slocum Road Nov. 9 to 13

Crews are replacing a broken valve stuck in the closed position that feeds drinking water to businesses in the Village Cafe parking lot, and the town says affected customers will be contacted before any water shutoff.

DARTMOUTH Drivers heading east on State Road (Route 6) in Dartmouth should expect a lane closure near Slocum Road next week while the town's Water Division replaces a broken water valve at that intersection.

The eastbound left travel lane will close from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day from Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13, the Town of Dartmouth said in a notice posted Saturday, Nov. 7. No work is planned on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, so the lane is set to close on four days in all: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Where the lane closes

The town describes the job as a water main repair on State Road at the intersection of Slocum Road. The lane closure starts near that intersection and runs east to the intersection of State Road and Wilbur Avenue, according to the notice. Only the eastbound left lane is listed as closed, and the notice does not list a detour or any closure of westbound lanes.

The town is asking drivers to use caution in the work zone, plan for possible delays and use other routes when they can.

Why the work is needed

The job replaces a broken 6-inch gate valve that is stuck in the closed position, the town said. That valve supplies drinking water to the businesses in the Village Cafe parking lot.

The Water Division will contact affected customers individually with advance notice of the date and time of any temporary water service interruption tied to the repair, according to the notice. The town did not say how many businesses that valve serves, how long any shutoff might last or how long the valve has been stuck, and South Coast 360 has asked the town's water and sewer superintendent for those details and will add them here if the town provides them.

The schedule

The lane closes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, and Tuesday, Nov. 10. The town says no work will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, and the closure returns during the same hours on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Friday, Nov. 13. The notice lists no lane closure outside those daytime hours.

Questions

The town lists Andrew LaFleur, Dartmouth's water and sewer superintendent, as the contact for questions about the repair, at 508-999-0742 or alafleur@dartmouthma.gov. The town said it appreciates the public's patience and cooperation while the repair is completed, and the closure is set to end Friday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m.

Notes

Every fact comes from the Town of Dartmouth's News Flash posted Nov. 7, which we read that morning and again that afternoon. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. Not known yet: the town did not say how many businesses the valve serves or how long any water shutoff could last, and we have asked the water and sewer superintendent, so anything the Water Division provides will be added to this story.
