Updated Oct. 18 with more detail.
MATTAPOISETT Mattapoisett voters can cast ballots early for the Nov. 3 state election at Town Hall, 16 Main St., through Friday, Oct. 30, according to a notice the town posted Oct. 7. The first Saturday session was Oct. 17.
Early voting hours
- Monday, Oct. 19, to Friday, Oct. 23 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 24 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Monday, Oct. 26, to Friday, Oct. 30 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Deadlines
Mattapoisett's notice lists only the early voting hours. The deadlines are set by state law and published by the Secretary of the Commonwealth. The deadline to register, update a registration or change party is 10 days before the election, which makes it Saturday, Oct. 24. Online registrations count until 11:59 p.m. that day, and mailed forms must be postmarked by then, the state's registration page says.
An application for a mail-in or absentee ballot must reach the Town Clerk by 5 p.m. on the fifth business day before the election, Tuesday, Oct. 27. A postmark does not count. Voters who qualify for an absentee ballot can arrange to vote it in person at the clerk's office until noon on Monday, Nov. 2, the state's absentee page says.
Returned ballots must reach the clerk's office or a drop box by the close of polls at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. In a November state election, the state allows three extra days for ballots mailed in the United States that are postmarked by Election Day. Ballots cannot be dropped off at a polling place on Election Day.
What's on the ballot
The Select Board's Sept. 22 agenda listed a vote to approve the warrant for the Nov. 3 state election. The Secretary of the Commonwealth's warrant form for the election lists races for U.S. senator, governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, auditor, U.S. representative, Governor's Council, state senator, state representative, district attorney and register of probate. Polls in a state election are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a town may open them as early as 5:45 a.m., the state says.
Nine statewide questions follow. They would open legislative and governor's office records to the public records law, let employees of the Committee for Public Counsel Services bargain collectively, replace party primaries with a single all-party primary, allow Election Day registration, change the limit on state revenue and rebate the excess, create a Nature for All Fund that would get part of the state taxes on sporting goods, recreational vehicles and golf courses, allow single-family homes on smaller lots with sewer and water, repeal retail sales of recreational marijuana, and, as a referendum, decide whether to keep a state law that changed firearms rules.
