Marion water main work on Route 6 pauses for winter, and Rochester trash moves to Saturday, Nov. 14

MARION Marion's contractor will stop work on the new Route 6 water main for the winter around mid-November and come back in the spring of 2027, when the full width of the travel lane gets new pavement, the town said in its latest construction update.

Marion also closes the Town House and police station parking lots on Sunday for pavement work, Rochester's trash pickup moves from Friday to Saturday under the town's holiday-week rule because Wednesday is Veterans Day, and Marion and Mattapoisett hold their joint hazardous waste day on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Both Marion and Mattapoisett hold fall town meeting on Monday, Nov. 9, and our previews have every article for Marion and Mattapoisett.

Route 6 water main in Marion

In the update posted Oct. 30, the town said the contractor was working at the entrance to Marion Pointe, near 59 Wareham Road, which is Route 6. When that is done, the crew returns to the intersection of Wareham Road and Point Road to finish the connection and install hydrants on the new main.

Until the job wraps up, the crew puts down temporary trench pavement at the end of each work day. The final paving, a mill and overlay of the whole travel lane, comes at the end of the project next spring. The town said the schedule can change with the weather or anything unforeseen, and it takes questions at the DPW, 508-748-3540, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays, or, while the phones are down, at the 508-748-3520 message line. The safety work at the Route 6 and Route 105 intersection is a separate project.

Two Marion lots closed Sunday, and DPW phones

The Hatch Group, Marion's paving contractor, will crack seal the Town House parking lot and the police station parking lot on Sunday, Nov. 8, starting no earlier than 7 a.m. and finishing around 2 p.m., the town posted Nov. 5, and no vehicles may park in either lot while the work is going on. The town describes crack sealing as preventive maintenance that fills cracks with asphalt cement and reinforcing fibers so the pavement does not break down faster.

Marion also posted on Friday, Nov. 6, that the DPW's phones were down and asked anyone who needs immediate help to leave a message at 508-748-3520. For emergencies outside DPW office hours, the town's notices direct residents to the police department, 508-748-1212, which passes concerns to the right department.

Trash and recycling in Veterans Day week

Rochester trash normally goes to the curb by 7 a.m. on Friday, and in any week with a holiday, pickup moves to Saturday, according to the town's trash and recycling page. With Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, Rochester trash should be out by 7 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, and Harvey Disposal Service takes questions at 508-995-0544.

In Mattapoisett, the town updated its trash notice on Nov. 6 to say that Wednesday and Thursday pickups will be a day late because of the holiday, with bins at the curb before 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

Rochester's page also lists three blue bins for clothing and other textiles, which state rules keep out of the trash: at the Highway Barn on Ryder Road, in the back parking lot of the Council on Aging, and to the right of the fire station on Hartley Road. The town has an agreement with CMRK, Inc., which handles textile recycling at no added cost to the town, and residents can book a home pickup by emailing pickups@cmrkne.com or by calling or texting the word Pickup to 508-466-4590.

Rochester residents can buy a sticker for the Marion Transfer Station on Benson Brook Road for $70 a vehicle, or $60 for seniors 70 and older and veterans, and the Rochester page lists the station's hours as Wednesdays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The page says days and times are subject to change and sends questions about hours to the transfer station at 508-748-3500.

Hazardous waste day, Nov. 14

Marion and Mattapoisett residents can bring household hazardous waste to the Marion DPW, 60 Benson Brook Road, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 14, according to the flyer Mattapoisett posted. The event is for residents of the two towns only, who need a transfer station sticker or other proof of residency such as a tax, water or sewer bill, with each load capped at 10 gallons or 10 pounds. Accepted items include oven and drain cleaners, motor oil, antifreeze, indoor pesticides, oil-based paint, thinners and pool chemicals, and questions go to 508-748-3540. The town's other fall dates are in our October list of Marion dates.

What Marion is planning to fix

Marion's Capital Improvement Planning Committee heard four requests from the facilities department on Oct. 28, according to minutes the town clerk received Nov. 5. The department asked to renovate the restrooms and concession area at Silvershell Beach and the restrooms at Washburn Park to meet accessibility standards, both with a possible grant, to repair the facade and replace the aging elevator controls at the library and museum building, and to replace the roof and trim at the Community Center, though the minutes list no cost for any of them.

Facilities Manager Shawn Cormier walked the committee through a draft 10-year capital plan, which he called a living document that will change through the fiscal year, the minutes say. The committee hears the DPW's highway and water requests on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Sippican School's on Wednesday, Dec. 2, then reviews every request on Dec. 9 and ranks them on Dec. 16.

Talk to a Mattapoisett board member

Mattapoisett Select Board member Nicole Doyon Lynch will hold office hours from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Marine Room at the Mattapoisett Library, the town posted. The same notice listed a first session on Nov. 4 and invites residents to bring questions and concerns about the issues facing the town.

Notes

Every fact comes from the towns' own posts: Marion's construction, crack sealing and DPW phone notices, the minutes of Marion's Capital Improvement Planning Committee, Rochester's trash and recycling page, Mattapoisett's holiday trash notice and office hours notice, the 2026 Harvey schedule that marks Nov. 11 as a holiday, and the hazardous waste flyer the two towns sponsor. Each was read Saturday, Nov. 7, and each date and weekday was checked against a calendar. We will add any word from the Marion DPW on the transfer station's Veterans Day hours and the date the Route 6 crew stops for the winter.
