NEW BEDFORD Fado singer Mariza returns to the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford on Friday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m., back on a stage where the theater says she has captivated sold-out audiences time and again.
The theater bills Mariza as an international fado sensation and a true New Bedford favorite. Fado is Portugal's most treasured musical tradition, an expressive lament of destiny. Friday's set moves between traditional numbers and newer songs. The Telegraph has called her a dazzling, captivating force to behold.
The theater describes her powerful voice and commanding stage presence as breathing new life into the tradition, and frames the concert as an evening of passion, beauty and song. Her past Zeiterion shows have drawn sold-out audiences time and again, the theater says.

The room
The Zeiterion, at 684 Purchase St. downtown, is New Bedford's last operating theater, a restored house with more than 1,200 seats. A $37 million renovation added modern amenities, new gathering spaces and restored architectural detail. For more than 100 years the stage has hosted international stars and local legends, and the Mainstage Series now presents dance, music, theater, comedy, lectures and film.
The event sponsor for Mariza is Horacio's. Bristol County Savings Bank is the season sponsor.
