One year after an 0-10 season, New Bedford High football won seven of its eight games, scored 292 points and is back in the state tournament. On Friday, Nov. 6, the Whalers make a 113-mile trip, the longest road trip in Division 1 by the Boston Globe's playoff preview, to play No. 5 Springfield Central at 6 p.m. at Berte Field as the No. 12 seed in the MIAA's Division 1 tournament.

The Globe called it a "drastic turnaround." A year ago the Whalers went 0-10, scored 49 points and allowed 386, by the 2025 scores on the team's MaxPreps schedule. This fall they averaged 36.5 points a game, outscored their opponents 292 to 157, beat Brockton for the first time since 2018, took over first place in the Big Three and closed the regular season with their highest score of the year, 52-20 at Dartmouth on Oct. 30. The Standard-Times put it in one headline: New Bedford football goes from winless to playoffs.

From 16 players to 60

Coach Robert Lomp, in his second season at New Bedford, came into this fall with a 145-62 career record at Apponequet, Wareham, Sandwich and New Bedford, according to the Globe's preseason preview; this fall's 7-1 makes it 152-63 by our count. "Last year, we didn't win a game. We weren't even in a game," Lomp told the Globe in October. "We started with 16 guys last year. This summer we had 60 come out. It's been a year-long process to get to this point."

"We wanted to see improvement year-to-year and build up the numbers in the program," Lomp said. "Then, obviously, we get the two key transfers and that changes the dynamic of the team." Going into the season, the Globe reported, he planned to mix more shotgun and spread looks into his double-wing offense and move the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 front, and the Whalers moved their home games back to their grass field on Maxfield Street, with seating capacity among the reasons.

Two weeks in, he could already see it. "That's how far we've come," Lomp told the Globe after the Whalers' second win. "It's great to see it after what happened last year. We were getting blown out week in and week out, it wasn't really close. It's been a big change in the culture of the team and our senior class is very strong."

The season, game by game

Sept. 11, Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech, won 42-8. It was the first football game between the two schools in 46 years, the Globe noted, and New Bedford won it by 34 points on the grass at Maxfield Street.

Sept. 19, Lowell, won 50-39. A year earlier New Bedford had lost 48-0 at Lowell, the Globe noted, and this time the Whalers put up 50 at home against a Lowell team that went 9-2 in 2025. Senior Lyric Ramos ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns, sophomore Miguel Neves ran for two more and senior quarterback Tru Gonsalves-Cosme threw for 159 yards, by the Globe's statewide leaders list for that Saturday. Lowell's New Haven-bound senior Collin Christiansen caught three touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 70 yards for a fourth score, the Globe reported, and New Bedford still won by 11. It was the Whalers' first set of back-to-back wins since 2022, by the Globe's count.

Sept. 25, at Hopkinton, won 44-8. Senior Jordyn Correia caught three passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and returned an interception 77 yards for another score, and the Globe named him a Player of the Week. New Bedford was 3-0 and averaging 45.3 points a game, the Globe's Week 4 preview noted, calling it "an explosive offense."

Oct. 3, at Quincy, lost 34-8. It was the only loss of the season. Quincy senior quarterback Ryan Sampson ran 11 times for 197 yards and scored on second-half runs of 73, 10, 27 and 28 yards, the Globe reported in naming him a Player of the Week, and Quincy is now the No. 10 seed in the Division 2 tournament. The Whalers have won four straight since.

Oct. 9, Brookline, won 42-6. New Bedford answered its only loss by allowing its fewest points of the year, holding a Brookline team that brought back eight key starters, by the Globe's preseason preview, to six points. It left the Whalers 4-1.

Oct. 16, Haverhill, won 34-28. New Bedford trailed 7-0 at halftime and rallied, the Standard-Times reported, as Gonsalves-Cosme threw a 72-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion, then returned an interception 89 yards to the Haverhill 1 late in the fourth quarter. Correia caught a 72-yard touchdown, Neves ran for two scores and Ramos ran for one and threw a two-point pass. Haverhill is now the No. 10 seed in Division 1, and its senior quarterback, Michael Bayko, has passed for 1,861 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, by the Globe's playoff preview.

Oct. 24, at Brockton, won 20-14. New Bedford trailed 14-6 in the fourth quarter at Marciano Stadium when Gonsalves-Cosme hit Ramos for a 39-yard touchdown, then found Correia to tie it, according to the Globe. Ramos picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards, then scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 90 seconds left. With four seconds to go, Brockton had the ball at New Bedford's 3-yard line, and Gonsalves-Cosme raced across the field to deflect Brockton's pass to the end zone. "I saw the quarterback's eyes follow him, so I tracked his hip, followed him and made a play," he told the Globe. In the first half, junior Matthew DeSantos had recovered a fumble that Neves turned into a 2-yard touchdown. The win was New Bedford's first over Brockton since 2018 and put the Whalers in first place in the Big Three. Brockton is also in the tournament, as the No. 15 seed in Division 1.

Oct. 30, at Dartmouth, won 52-20. New Bedford scored seven touchdowns, went for two after every one and made five. It was a 20-20 game with 38 seconds left in the first half, after Dartmouth had led 14-12 in the second quarter. Ramos scored on the last play of the half, and Gonsalves-Cosme ran 65 yards on a keeper on the first snap of the second half. Earlier he had run 68 yards for a score on a fake punt. Logan Desmarais ran for two touchdowns, Correia batted away a third-and-20 deep pass, and once New Bedford led by 30 in the fourth quarter the clock ran the rest of the way. It was New Bedford's first win over Dartmouth since 2022, the Standard-Times reported.

The stars

Tru Gonsalves-Cosme, senior quarterback. He came over from Bishop Stang for his senior year and switched from receiver to quarterback. Through six games he had thrown six touchdown passes and scored four more himself, the Standard-Times reported, and at Dartmouth it credited him with 160 rushing yards, 107 passing yards, a two-point run and a two-point pass. He plays defense too, and two of his biggest plays of the season, the 89-yard interception return against Haverhill and the breakup that saved the Brockton win, came on that side of the ball.

Lyric Ramos, senior running back. Also a Bishop Stang transfer, Ramos led the team with seven touchdowns and three two-point conversions through six games, by the Standard-Times count, starting with his 100-yard, two-touchdown day against Lowell. He scored both fourth-quarter touchdowns at Brockton, finishing with 62 total yards there, and the Globe made him a Player of the Week. He added three more touchdowns at Dartmouth. "I got right back into my hook-to-curl like a linebacker should. I saw the ball come to me and made a play," Ramos told the Globe about his interception at Brockton.

Logan Desmarais, senior captain. The Globe's preview called him a key cog in the double-wing at fullback, and he also plays inside linebacker. He had six touchdowns and two two-point conversions through six games, the Standard-Times reported, and at Dartmouth he ran 14 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 40 yards and tipped away a Dartmouth two-point pass. Desmarais, Gonsalves-Cosme and Ramos are all on the Standard-Times ballot for Week 8 Player of the Week.

Jordyn Correia, No. 2, senior receiver and defensive back. Known for his skills on the basketball court, Correia gave football a try as a senior, the Standard-Times wrote, and through six games he had caught five touchdown passes and four two-point conversions. He caught the pass that tied the Brockton game, scored the 77-yard pick-six at Hopkinton and at Dartmouth won a jump ball for a two-point catch.

Miguel Neves, sophomore. A linebacker and tailback who transferred from Greater New Bedford, Neves ran for two touchdowns against Lowell, ran for touchdowns of 3 and 1 yards against Haverhill, scored at Brockton and dove in for a two-point conversion at Dartmouth.

Players to watch on both sides of the ball

Up front, the Globe's preseason preview listed experience up front as New Bedford's biggest strength, with nearly the entire offensive line back to block for the double wing. For the four-man defensive front Lomp planned this fall, the Globe named senior Connar Silva-Nuno and junior Gabriel Ourique as added depth on the defensive line.

Behind that front, Desmarais lines up at inside linebacker when he is not carrying the ball, and Neves plays linebacker as well as tailback, by the Globe's preview. Sophomore Nyzelle Vasquez, No. 25, is listed at middle linebacker and tight end on the New Bedford roster MaxPreps posts.

New Bedford's defense has made big plays all season. Correia's 77-yard pick-six at Hopkinton, Gonsalves-Cosme's 89-yard return against Haverhill and Ramos's 35-yard return at Brockton all came on interceptions, and DeSantos's fumble recovery at Brockton set up a touchdown. At Dartmouth, Correia broke up a deep pass on third-and-20 and Desmarais knocked down a two-point try.

At receiver, Jayden Russell was named with Correia in the Globe's preseason preview as a likely lead receiver, with Gonsalves-Cosme, a receiver himself until this year, throwing to them.

The seniors' last run

This is the last fall in a New Bedford uniform for Gonsalves-Cosme, Ramos, Desmarais, Correia and defensive lineman Connar Silva-Nuno, the seniors named in the Globe's and the Standard-Times' coverage. Their season has at least two games left: Friday in Springfield and the Thanksgiving week game against Durfee at Fenway Park on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 4 p.m. A win over Durfee there would clinch the Big Three title, the Globe reported after the Brockton win.

The program's playoff history

They are playing for a program with Super Bowl history. The MIAA's championship record book lists New Bedford in the 1997 Division 1 Super Bowl, a 25-0 loss to St. John's Prep, and in a Dec. 4, 1993, Super Bowl against Plymouth in which Jo Jo Goodine and Sean Gomes each returned an interception for a touchdown, a one-team Super Bowl record the MIAA still lists, shared with Lee.

They have been back in the playoffs since. In 2011 they reached a Division 1 semifinal, losing 42-14 to Needham at Weymouth High School on Nov. 29, Needham Patch reported. In 2013 a 3-4 New Bedford team made the Division 1 South playoffs a week after upsetting Brockton, WBSM reported, and opened at Attleboro.

The Thanksgiving rivalry with Durfee goes back generations, and New Bedford leads the series 79-44-10, the Globe reported in September when it announced this year's game at Fenway Park. The Whalers and Durfee open a Wednesday doubleheader there, with Xaverian and St. John's Prep playing the second game.

History between the teams

The MIAA's championship program and both teams' 2025 and 2026 schedules show no earlier meeting between New Bedford and Springfield Central. They share no opponent this fall, but two from last year: Springfield Central beat Taunton 28-14 and Lowell 49-14 in the 2025 Division 1 tournament, while New Bedford lost 50-7 at Taunton and 48-0 at Lowell during its 0-10 season, before beating Lowell 50-39 this September. Against teams in this Division 1 field, New Bedford is 2-0, beating No. 10 Haverhill and No. 15 Brockton; Springfield Central is 1-1, beating No. 6 Xaverian and losing to No. 1 St. John's Prep, by the MIAA seeds.

What Springfield Central brings

Springfield Central is 7-1 and has won seven straight since a 29-14 home loss to St. John's Prep, now the Division 1 top seed, in the opener. It went 5-0 in its league, first in the AA division, and has outscored opponents 318 to 127, by its MaxPreps schedule. The Globe picked the Golden Eagles as one of two Division 1 favorites.

Sept. 11, St. John's Prep, lost 29-14. Sept. 18, at North Attleborough, won 34-14. Sept. 25, Xaverian, won 21-14, knocking off the Globe's top-ranked team at the time on a night when Notre Dame-bound running back Isaiah Rogers broke an 86-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half and caught a 21-yard touchdown pass on a screen, the Globe reported. Then came five league wins: 48-21 at Westfield on Oct. 2, 49-14 over Longmeadow on Oct. 9, 55-14 over East Longmeadow on Oct. 15, 41-14 at Minnechaug on Oct. 22 and 56-7 at West Springfield on Oct. 30. No game since Xaverian has been closer than 27 points. In the 56-7 finale Central led 35-7 at the half, and Dasean Auston ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while Kodi Massey caught passes for 93 yards and two scores, by the MaxPreps game report built from the team's own statistics.

The offense spreads the ball around. Both of its quarterbacks have thrown touchdown passes: sophomore Jahir Charles, No. 10, has 12 with 68.2% of his throws completed, and senior Jareth Staine, No. 7, has six with a 69.4% completion rate and runs for 32 yards a game, by the statistics the team enters on MaxPreps, last updated Nov. 2. The Globe describes Staine as Stonehill-bound. Three senior receivers average more than 40 yards a game: Missoni Brown, No. 6, at 64.8 with five touchdown catches; William Davis, No. 23, at 53.6 with five; and Kodi Massey, No. 0, at 41.6 with a team-high six.

Rogers, No. 26, rushed for 986 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2025 and caught 37 passes for 401 yards, High School on SI reported, citing 247Sports. This fall he is averaging 66.7 rushing yards a game with eight total touchdowns, six on the ground, by the team's figures, and sophomore Dasean Auston, No. 8, a receiver and halfback, has six rushing touchdowns and averages 40.9 yards a game on the ground.

The Globe wrote that the Golden Eagles' defensive front "features several college prospects." The best known is Wake Forest commit McCoy Richardson, No. 9, a 6-foot-3 senior listed at 315 pounds on the team's roster, with a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery this season. Senior end Phoenix Yates, No. 49, and sophomore middle linebacker Owen Muldoon, No. 4, share the team lead with 2.5 sacks each, and Muldoon leads in tackles at 7.2 a game. Junior safety Lucas Robert, No. 14, has two interceptions, the team's most.

Central won the Division 3 state title in 2018 and reached the Division 1 final in 2022, losing 13-0 to St. John's Prep, according to the MIAA's championship program, and High School on SI counts three state titles for the program, in 2018, 2019 and 2021. Last fall the Golden Eagles went 9-2, beat Taunton 28-14 and Lowell 49-14 in the Division 1 tournament and lost 36-22 to Xaverian on Nov. 22, 2025, by their MaxPreps schedule.

Coach Bill Watson, listed as William Watson on Springfield Central's MaxPreps staff page, told the Globe after the Xaverian win that his team was still looking for consistency. "Offensively, right now we're reliant on big plays and I want to be more consistent moving the ball down the field," he said.

The per-game figures, the streak totals and the margins are our math from both teams' published scores. New Bedford's player figures come from the Standard-Times and the Globe, since the school publishes no season statistics; Springfield Central's come from the statistics the team enters on MaxPreps.

Our read on the matchup

This is our analysis. Springfield Central has the better numbers: it has scored 3.3 more points a game, allowed 3.8 fewer and won its last seven by an average of 29.4 points. Its passing game, with 18 touchdown passes and three receivers who each average more than 40 yards, will test a New Bedford defense whose biggest plays this fall came from Correia, Gonsalves-Cosme and Ramos.

Going the other way, New Bedford's double wing runs through Desmarais at fullback, Ramos and Neves, with Gonsalves-Cosme keeping it himself, into a defense anchored up front by the 315-pound Richardson, with end Phoenix Yates and linebacker Owen Muldoon at 2.5 sacks each. Staying ahead of the chains against that front, and turning takeaways into points the way it did at Brockton, is the Whalers' clearest path. New Bedford has also won two one-score games this fall, at Brockton and against Haverhill, both by six points; Springfield Central's last one was Sept. 25 against Xaverian.

Friday night: time, tickets, bracket

Kickoff is 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Berte Field, Springfield Central's varsity field at the school, 1840 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, by the MIAA's Division 1 bracket, the schedule New Bedford posts on Arbiter Live and the school's MaxPreps listing. Every Round of 16 and Round of 8 game is played at the higher seed's field, the MIAA said when it released the brackets Nov. 1.

Tickets are sold only online through GoFan from the Round of 16 on, and every MIAA ticket is general admission. A Round of 16 football ticket costs $9.40 with fees included, and a Round of 8 ticket $11.50, by the MIAA's tournament price list. New Bedford's MaxPreps schedule links the GoFan listing for Friday's game, and the MIAA's media and ticketing page has the rules.

The winner advances to the Round of 8 against No. 4 Wachusett Regional (8-0) or No. 13 Shrewsbury (4-4), who play Friday at 7 p.m. at Hal Lane Field at Wachusett Regional, according to the MIAA's Division 1 bracket. Because the higher seed hosts, a New Bedford win paired with a Shrewsbury upset would bring a Round of 8 game to Maxfield Street. It is also the last year of this tournament format: starting in 2027, the Globe reported, the MIAA will add a Division 1A tournament for the top eight power-ranked teams in Divisions 1 and 2 and cut the other divisions from 16 teams to eight.

What it means for New Bedford

For a city program that scored 49 points all of last season, this fall brought its first back-to-back wins since 2022, its first win over Brockton since 2018, its first over Dartmouth since 2022 and first place in the Big Three heading into Thanksgiving week. It came in a fall when New Bedford's boys soccer team also clinched a Big 3 Conference title, beating Brockton 2-0, the Globe reported in October.

After Friday, the next stop is Fenway Park. General admission tickets for the Nov. 25 doubleheader start at $20 through the Red Sox at redsox.com/highschoolfootball and cover both games, and 20% of every ticket sold goes back to the schools, the Globe reported.

Friday's final will be on the Friday Night Scoreboard, and the full South Coast playoff picture is in our bracket story. Read our game story on the 52-20 win at Dartmouth.

Notes

The seeds, kickoff times, sites and Round of 8 path come from the MIAA's Division 1 bracket and its Nov. 1 release, the ticket rule from its media page and the prices from its tournament price list, and the program's Super Bowl history from the MIAA's 2025 championship program. Every New Bedford score comes from the team's MaxPreps schedule, matched against the schedule the school posts on Arbiter Live; the two disagree on one score, Haverhill, which Arbiter and the Standard-Times list as 34-28 and MaxPreps as 34-27, and we use 34-28; the 292 points, the 157 allowed and the per-game figures follow from those scores. For 2025, the Globe put New Bedford's total at 41 points; the 2025 scores on MaxPreps add to 49, and we use 49. Springfield Central's results, roster numbers and statistics come from its MaxPreps pages, where the team enters them. The per-game figures, streaks, margins and Lomp's updated record are our math. The coach's listing comes from New Bedford Public Schools' athletics page. Player figures and quotes come from the Boston Globe, the Standard-Times and High School on SI, the 2011 and 2013 playoff games from Needham Patch and WBSM, and the Dartmouth plays from the Dartmouth Community Media broadcast; each is credited where it appears. We read the bracket and New Bedford's schedule again Thursday morning, Nov. 5, and checked each date and weekday against a calendar. We have asked the school for a word from the coach, a team photo, the roster and season statistics, and will add them when they arrive.
