SOUTH COAST Ten public trails across the South Coast, from a half-mile river loop in Acushnet to 25 miles of forest trails in Freetown, are open this fall with no admission fee posted by the trusts and agencies that run them.
Each entry gives the trailhead, trail length, hours, dog rules, parking and fee as the manager posts them, plus what the manager's page says you will see. Deer hunting season is open, and three of the properties allow hunting, their managers' pages say, so a section on the state's dates follows the list.
How we chose
We call these the best because each one passed six tests. It is open to the public, and its manager posts no admission fee. A public agency or a nonprofit land trust owns or manages it and posts the trail facts on its own website. That site, or a page it links to, gives a trail length or a trail map. It posts where to park. No town has more than two entries. Together they cover shore, woods, river, salt marsh and farm.
The walks are grouped by type and listed in town order within each group. They were picked by these criteria and are not ranked.
Shore and salt marsh
- Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, Dartmouth and Westport Mass Audubon lists the Stone Barn at 786 E. Horseneck Road and a trailhead on Allens Neck Road, both in South Dartmouth, and a field office at 1280 Horseneck Road in Westport. Its 7 miles of trails are open daily from dawn to dusk, admission is free for all ages, and the sanctuary lists parking among its facilities. Pets are not allowed, though service animals are welcome, and hunting is prohibited. Mass Audubon says the sanctuary spans beach, fields, woodlands, pond and marsh, and its trails give ocean and pond views from many points.
- Osprey Marsh, Marion The Sippican Lands Trust says the property sits on Point Road about 3 miles south of Route 6 (Wareham Road), with limited parking on site. Tucker's Trail winds through uplands and marsh and meets an 800-foot accessible boardwalk and stone dust path that ends at a viewing platform; the trust posts a trail map. Its properties are open sunrise to sunset, and pets should be leashed. The page lists no fee. The trust describes 19.8 acres of woods, wetlands and marsh with water views of Planting Island Cove, and allows no hunting without its permission.
- Nasketucket Bay State Reservation, Mattapoisett The state Department of Conservation and Recreation lists the address as Branch Beach Road, with hours of dawn to dusk, free parking on site and dogs allowed. DCR describes 209 acres of wooded trails, open fields and rocky shoreline. The Buzzards Bay Coalition page that DCR links to puts the entrance and a large gravel lot at 94 Brandt Island Road, counts 5 miles of trails and says the Salt Marsh Trail reaches the rocky shore of Nasketucket Bay. DCR's page does not list hunting among its activities, and the coalition's page does not mention it.
River and farm
- The Sawmill, Acushnet The Buzzards Bay Coalition owns this park at 32 Mill Road. It lists a medium-sized gravel lot plus on-street parking and gives the parking cost as free. The main trail is about a half-mile and is ADA accessible from the parking area to the red maple swamp, the coalition says. It is open dawn to dusk, with dogs on leash. The walk starts on a footbridge over the Acushnet River above a fishway, then splits between boardwalks through a restored red maple swamp and a path to the North River Overlook. The coalition's page does not address hunting.
- East Over Reservation, Rochester The Trustees lists the Clapp Road entrance in Rochester, with a parking lot about a half-mile up Clapp Road on the right and a trail map at a kiosk in the lot. The page gives no total mileage but says miles of trails cross farm fields, forests and hedgerows bordered by double stone walls capped with quarried granite. The Trustees charges no admission and keeps it open daily from sunrise to sunset. Dogs stay on leash, and hunting is barred.
- Lyman Reserve, Wareham, Bourne and Plymouth The Trustees says the reserve spans all three towns, with its lot entrance on Head of the Bay Road about 250 feet past Packard Street on the right and a trail map at a kiosk in the main lot. A 1.5-mile loop runs to Red Brook, and a quarter-mile trail across the road reaches the beach on Buttermilk Bay. The page lists freshwater wetlands, pine barrens, a sandy beach and a view of the Cape Cod Canal railroad bridge. Admission is free, hours are sunrise to sunset, dogs need a leash, and hunting is permitted under state and town laws.
- Westport Town Farm, Westport The Trustees runs this farm at 830 Drift Road, with parking on the left and a trail map at a kiosk in the lot. A 1-mile loop leaves from the barnyard, follows stone-walled paddocks and crosses hillside pastures with a view of the East Branch of the Westport River, The Trustees says. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset and free to all. Dogs must be leashed, and hunting is not permitted.
Woods
- Destruction Brook Woods, Dartmouth The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust's main lot is on Slade's Corner Road, about a mile past Davoll's General Store in Russell's Mills Village, with roadside parking at Woodcock and Fisher roads. The trust posts a trail map but no mileage, and lists no fee. Its reserves are open dawn to dusk unless posted. Dogs are allowed, up to three per adult, on leash or within sight and hearing and trained to come when called. The trust describes walks on the old Duff estate's bridle paths, mature woods with American beech and Atlantic white cedar, rock ledges covered with ferns and lichens, and the brook that once powered the mills of Russell's Mills. Hunting is banned on trust land but allowed on an adjoining town parcel on the Green Trail.
- Freetown-Fall River State Forest, Freetown and Fall River DCR lists the entrance at 110 Slab Bridge Road in Assonet, with free parking, dogs allowed and hours of sunrise to sunset. The 5,000-acre forest has 25 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and dirt bikes. DCR says dirt bike season runs to the last Sunday in November, which is Nov. 29 this year. DCR posts a trail map and says the trails lead to Profile Rock "for a view of the state's southern coast." Hunting is among the listed activities.
- Rehoboth State Forest, Rehoboth DCR lists the forest at 90 Peck St., with a small free lot at the entrance, dogs allowed and hours of sunrise to sunset. A gentle 1-mile loop includes a spur to an Atlantic white cedar swamp, and DCR posts a trail map. Hunting is a listed activity.
Walking during deer season
Archery deer season runs Oct. 5 through Nov. 28 this year, shotgun season Nov. 30 through Dec. 12, and primitive firearms season Dec. 14 through 31, according to MassWildlife. MassWildlife also lists a new winter deer season: Jan. 1 through 30, 2027, in wildlife management zones 9, 10 and 11, and Jan. 1 through Feb. 13, 2027, in zones 13 and 14. The wildlife management zone map linked from that page shows which zone covers each town. Hunting hours start a half hour before sunrise and end a half hour after sunset. State rules bar hunting on Sundays.
The Lyman Reserve and the Freetown-Fall River and Rehoboth state forests allow hunting, according to their managers' pages. At Destruction Brook Woods, where hunting is allowed on the adjoining town land, the trust recommends that walkers wear at least 500 square inches of blaze orange on the head, back or chest during hunting season, even on trust land. The state's orange rule applies to hunters: 500 square inches on the chest, back and head during the shotgun, primitive firearms and winter seasons, MassWildlife says.
Before you go
All 10 post hours that end at dusk or sunset, so plan the walk to end in daylight. The Sippican Lands Trust asks visitors to use insect repellent with DEET against ticks and mosquitoes, and The Trustees asks walkers to stay on marked trails, in part to limit exposure to Lyme disease. The Trustees also suggests photographing the trail map at the kiosk or downloading it before you go.
Dog rules vary. Allens Pond bans pets, though service animals are allowed. The Trustees, and the Buzzards Bay Coalition at The Sawmill, require leashes, the Sippican Lands Trust asks for them, and the Dartmouth trust allows dogs off leash if they stay within sight and hearing and come when called. DCR's pages say only that dogs are allowed.

How we verified this
Every trail fact comes from the owner's or manager's own website: Mass Audubon, The Trustees, the Buzzards Bay Coalition, the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, the Sippican Lands Trust and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, all read Oct. 19. For Nasketucket Bay, the trail miles and entrance address come from the Buzzards Bay Coalition page that DCR's own page links to. Hunting dates and rules come from MassWildlife's deer hunting regulations page, read the same day. Where a page does not list a fee or trail mileage, we say so rather than guess. We left out fall color and peak foliage claims because none of these pages make them. Fort Taber Park in New Bedford was left off because the city's Fort Taber Park page, read Oct. 19, gives no street address or hours for the park and lists its parking as "pass required." We did not find a property in Fairhaven, Lakeville, Somerset, Swansea or Dighton whose owner's own page we could read and check against all six tests on Oct. 19. We checked each date and weekday against a calendar. Not heard: no one was contacted. No business paid to be included or knew about this story.
