Marion: Front Street sidewalk and crack sealing

Marion's Department of Public Works, through contractor Hatch Landscape and Design Inc., starts the Front Street sidewalk reconstruction Monday, the town said in a notice posted Oct. 16. The project runs from 182 Front St. to the intersection with Vine Street. The contractor will first finish the section from Cottage Street to 182 Front St., then continue from Cottage Street to Vine Street. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the town expects the job to be done by Thanksgiving, weather permitting.

About 200 feet of sidewalk at a time will be closed to people on foot, along with the traffic lane next to it while crews are working. Police details will run alternating one-way traffic through the open lane. Parking on Front Street will be limited, and the town asks drivers not to park along the road and to find other parking, including the Island Wharf Road lot. Driveway access will stay open, with possible short delays.

Separately, the town's paving contractor, Indus, will crack seal 14 Marion roads Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 20 to 22, under a revised start date the town posted Oct. 16: Benson Brook Road, Parlowtown Road, Holmes Road, Water Street, Ryders Lane, Pleasant Street, South Street, School Street, Ridgewood Lane, Giffords Corner Road, Abels Way, Joanne Drive, Jenna Drive and the Evergreen Cemetery roadway. Work will not start before 7 a.m. and should finish around 3 p.m., the notice says. The town describes crack sealing as a preventive treatment that fills pavement cracks with asphalt cement and reinforcing fibers. It asks that no vehicles or equipment be parked on those roads during the work.

Questions go to the Marion DPW at 508-748-3540, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. For emergencies outside DPW hours, the town asks callers to use the police department, 508-748-1212, which will pass concerns to the right department.

How we verified this

Every highway and state-road fact comes from MassDOT notices on Mass511, which we read Oct. 19 between 7:08 and 7:37 a.m. through the site's data service; we kept a dated copy of every notice, with its MassDOT event number. The Marion facts come from two Town of Marion News Flash posts dated Oct. 16, read Oct. 19. We checked each weekday against a calendar (Oct. 19 is a Monday; Thanksgiving is Nov. 26). We left out the New Bedford I-195/Route 18 interchange closures and two Route 18 notices MassDOT files under Fairhaven whose location we could not pin down. Road numbers and town labels are printed as the notices give them. Mass511 listings change during the day; the story reflects what was posted when we read it. Not heard: no one was contacted. Questions for MassDOT District 5 and the Marion DPW are logged but had not been sent as of Oct. 19.
