ALDI will open its new Swansea grocery store at 58 Swansea Mall Drive on Thursday, Nov. 5, and the company says shoppers can come in and buy groceries a day earlier. The store takes over existing commercial space in the shopping center where Five Below and Burlington have already opened.

The store page invites shoppers to a sneak peek starting Wednesday, Nov. 4, where they can "fully shop the store and find all your favorite ALDI products." As of Oct. 25 the page still lists the location as not yet open. Swansea is the only Massachusetts store on the company's current list of grand openings, which also names new stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

What opening day brings

The first 200 people at the store on Nov. 5 will each get a numbered card, which they trade at the door for an ALDI gift card, according to the company's official rules for the promotion. The values vary: 100 are worth $5, 60 are worth $10 and 20 are worth $20, while 10 are worth $50 and 10 are worth $100, for $3,000 in all, and each card's amount is assigned at random.

No purchase is needed. Entrants must be 18 or older and live within 50 miles of the store, and the limit is one card per household. People who arrive before the doors open line up in the order they came, and the gift cards cannot be used online. The first 200 customers that day also get a bag of ALDI products, and the store will hand out free shopping totes while they last, the store page says.

The giveaway begins when the store opens Nov. 5 and runs until it closes that day or until all the gift cards are claimed, if that comes first, according to ALDI.

An estimated $2.27 million conversion

The building permit application, filed with the town on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, describes a "retrofit of existing commercial properties into an ALDI retail grocery store" at 58 and 86 Swansea Mall Drive. It lists 20,147 square feet on a single floor, a sprinkler system and a design occupant load of 241 people.

The estimated cost is $2,270,501. That includes $1,504,256 for the building work, $420,500 for electrical, $194,000 for heating and air conditioning, $135,745 for plumbing and $16,000 for other mechanical work. The permit fee is $22,700, payable to the Town of Swansea, and the property owner named on the application is Gator Swansea Property LLC.

An assistant to the town's building inspector told WPRI in August 2025 that the permit was issued July 30, 2025. WPRI reported at the time that the building had been home to a Price Rite. ALDI's store list shows its other Bristol County stores in Fall River, Dartmouth and Raynham.

The rest of the center

Gator Investments lists the property, Swansea Mall Center at 58 to 86 Swansea Mall Drive, among its commercial holdings. Five Below's store directory lists a Swansea store at 58-86 Swansea Mall, and Burlington lists its Swansea store at 86 Swansea Mall Drive. The Fall River Reporter reported Oct. 21 that Five Below opened Aug. 28 and Burlington opened Oct. 2.

PetSmart, which has a Swansea store on Route 6, is expected to move into the center and be open by the first quarter of 2027, the Fall River Reporter reported. Planning Board Chair Jonathan Carreiro said earlier this year that the plans also include two restaurants, one with about 110 seats and another with about 60, in a later phase of the project, according to the same report.

Notes

The opening dates, giveaway details, store status and other Bristol County stores come from ALDI's own pages and official promotion rules, and the cost and size figures come from the Swansea building permit application for 58 and 86 Swansea Mall Drive. The Five Below, Burlington and Gator Investments pages confirm the other stores and the owner. The permit issue date and the Price Rite history are WPRI's reporting, and the Five Below and Burlington opening dates, the PetSmart move and the Planning Board chair's comment on restaurants are the Fall River Reporter's, credited in the story. We read them on Oct. 25. Nov. 4 is a Wednesday, Nov. 5 is a Thursday and June 25, 2025 was a Wednesday.
