The Bristol County district attorney's office was not ready to decide Wednesday, Oct. 28, whether to accept Gregory Groom's request to plead guilty to a lesser charge in the killing of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro, WJAR reported. The case is set to return to Fall River Superior Court on Tuesday, Nov. 10, for a possible plea hearing, the station reported.

Groom, who is charged with murder, did not appear before the judge at Wednesday's pretrial conference, WJAR reported. His lawyer, Elliot Levine, was told in court that the district attorney was not ready to make a decision on the request he sent the office in August, according to the station. Levine declined to comment outside court, WJAR reported.

Many people came to the courthouse in support of Monteiro's family, the station reported. Her family had asked supporters to gather there before the hearing to oppose a plea deal, WJAR reported Tuesday.

South Coast 360 will update this story as we learn more.

What we know

In an Aug. 26 letter, Levine asked District Attorney Thomas Quinn III to let Groom plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a sentence of 19 to 20 years, WJAR reported Tuesday. Groom pleaded not guilty to murder and witness intimidation in Fall River Superior Court in November 2025 and was ordered held without bail, according to court records as the Fall River Reporter reported them. Groom is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

What we do not know yet

Whether the district attorney's office will accept or oppose the plea request. South Coast 360 has asked the district attorney's office and the Superior Court clerk for the record of Wednesday's hearing and the next date.

Our earlier story has the background of the case, the charges and the penalties they carry.
