REHOBOTH The murder case against Gregory Groom, charged in the August 2025 killing of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro in Rehoboth, returns to Fall River Superior Court on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a pretrial conference, WJAR reported. Monteiro's family is asking people to come to the courthouse that morning to oppose a possible plea deal.
In an Aug. 26 letter obtained by WJAR, Groom's lawyer asked Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III to let Groom plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a sentence of 19 to 20 years, the station reported. The lawyer also wrote that Groom has no criminal record, WJAR reported.
Groom's lawyer declined to comment Tuesday beyond saying Wednesday's court appearance would be "uneventful," WJAR reported.
What the family is asking
Monteiro's older sister, Faith Monteiro, told WJAR that a plea deal would not bring justice for her family. She asked supporters to gather at the Fall River Superior courthouse at 9 a.m. Wednesday, before the hearing, "to stand for justice for Kylee and her baby and stand against this plea deal," she told the station.
"It's not okay, it's not just, and my sister and her baby deserve more than that," she said, according to WJAR. She told the station that under the proposed sentence Groom would be eligible for parole after 12 years.
Faith Monteiro is also starting a nonprofit in her sister's name to support expectant mothers and children facing homelessness, domestic violence and mental health challenges, WJAR reported.
The case so far
A Bristol County grand jury indicted Groom, of Rehoboth, in November 2025 on charges of murder and witness intimidation in Monteiro's death on Aug. 7, 2025, on County Street in Rehoboth, Quinn's office announced at the time, as the Fall River Reporter published it. Groom was 22 when he was indicted.
Groom pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Fall River Superior Court on Nov. 25, 2025, and was ordered held without bail, according to court records as the Fall River Reporter reported them.
Prosecutors have said that Groom was the first person to report Monteiro missing, on Aug. 8, 2025, and later admitted to police that he stabbed her during an argument and buried her body in nearby woods, the Fall River Reporter reported, citing WCVB. Prosecutors have said Groom admitted to killing Monteiro and her unborn child, WJAR reported. Groom is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
What the charges carry
First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole in Massachusetts, under Chapter 265, Section 2, of the General Laws. Second-degree murder carries life in prison with parole eligibility after a term the court sets.
Manslaughter is punishable by up to 20 years in state prison under Chapter 265, Section 13, so the 19 to 20 year term in the defense letter sits at the top of that range.
