SOUTH COAST Six South Coast communities had posted unofficial results from Tuesday's state election on their own websites by Wednesday morning, Nov. 4. The Associated Press had called the races for governor and U.S. Senate and seven of the nine statewide ballot questions, according to AP results published by WBUR, as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The AP called the governor's race for the Democratic ticket of Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. Kimberley Driscoll, and the Senate race for Sen. Edward J. Markey, a Democrat. It called Questions 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 for yes and Questions 3 and 8 for no, and it had not called Questions 5 or 7. South Coast 360 does not call races itself; every call in this story is the AP's.
Freetown, New Bedford, Mattapoisett, Plymouth and Taunton have posted unofficial counts covering all of their precincts, and Wareham has posted a preliminary town-wide tally. The other 11 communities South Coast 360 covers had not posted unofficial results on their websites when South Coast 360 last checked, as listed below. Every figure in this story is unofficial until it is certified, and under state law, a mail ballot sent from inside the U.S. by Election Day must be accepted if it reaches the local clerk by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, the third day after the election, so totals can still change in every community.
Town by town tables for every race and question are on the South Coast 360 Election Center, updated as each community posts.
What the AP has called
In AP's statewide count, Healey and Driscoll had 1,472,525 votes to 817,553 for the Republican ticket led by Michael Minogue, listed on the ballot as Minogue and Oliver. In the Senate race, Markey had 1,498,575 votes to 762,076 for Republican John Deaton. WBUR's results page lists two of the three governor tickets and two of the four Senate candidates on the ballot. Those statewide counts are partial: WBUR's results data showed 85.28% of precincts reporting in the governor and Senate races and 84.31% to 84.82% on the questions in its 10:30 a.m. update.
WBUR's page already showed the AP's calls for Healey and Markey in its 9:05 p.m. Tuesday update. WBUR's results data time-stamps the question calls from 11:33 p.m. Tuesday, for Question 1, to 1:47 a.m. Wednesday, for Question 4.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Question 1 | Expand public records law | Called for yes | 1,986,099 | 324,430 |

| Question 4 | Allow Election Day voter registration | Called for yes | 1,311,440 | 1,011,638 |
| Question 5 | Alter state tax revenue limit | Not called | 1,098,398 | 1,196,050 |
| Question 6 | Create nature conservation fund | Called for yes | 1,400,413 | 899,024 |

| Question 9 | Uphold 2024 gun law | Called for yes | 1,572,265 | 773,368 |
Question 7, which would allow single-family homes on smaller lots, was the closest in the state: 1,156,338 no to 1,138,365 yes in AP's count, 17,973 votes apart by South Coast 360's subtraction. On Question 5, which would change the state's tax revenue limit, no led 1,196,050 to 1,098,398.

Where the posted towns and the state differ
By South Coast 360's count of the posted tallies, five of the six communities had more no votes than yes votes on Question 4, Election Day voter registration, which the AP called for yes; New Bedford was the exception. Freetown was the only one of the six with more no votes than yes votes on Question 9, the 2024 gun law, which the AP also called for yes, and the only one where the Republican candidates for governor and Senate received the most votes.
By the same count, the posted towns split differently on the two questions the AP had not called. No led Question 5 statewide, but five of the six communities had more yes votes than no votes. Mattapoisett was the exception, at 1,984 no to 1,952 yes, the closest count on any question in the six communities. On Question 7, five of the six had more no votes than yes votes, as the statewide count did, and New Bedford was the exception.
District races: one fully in, the rest waiting
Only one contested district race has every one of its precincts posted: the 1st Plymouth state representative district, which covers Plymouth Precincts 4, 6 to 12 and 14 to 18 and no other community. Michelle L. Badger, the Democratic incumbent, received the most votes in the unofficial count, 14,221 to 9,652 for David Michael Golden Jr., the Republican. That count comes from Plymouth's sheet, which leaves out write-ins, hand counts, military and overseas ballots and provisional ballots.

Who has not posted yet
Acushnet, Dartmouth, Dighton, Fall River, Marion, Rochester, Somerset, Swansea and Westport had not posted unofficial results on their town or city websites when South Coast 360 checked just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Fairhaven and Rehoboth had not posted results when South Coast 360 last checked their sites, at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday. Marion's election page links to two unofficial results files, but neither was open to the public when South Coast 360 checked.
Some ballots are counted after Election Day on a set schedule: Freetown counts its eligible late mail ballots Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:05 p.m., and Fall River counts its outstanding absentee and early voted ballots in a public session Saturday, Nov. 7, at 9 a.m., as South Coast 360 reported Oct. 29 from the town's and city's notices.
What happens next
Taunton's notice lays out the steps after election night: the city updates its hand counts, write-ins and provisional ballots from Wednesday, Nov. 4, through Tuesday, Nov. 10, holds its post-election tabulation Thursday, Nov. 12, at 8:30 a.m. in City Council Chambers and has its Election Commission count ballots from overseas voters Friday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. The city certifies the election Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m. Other communities update and certify on their own notices and the state's schedule.
With Questions 5 and 7 still uncalled, South Coast 360 will report the AP's calls as they appear, add each community's numbers to the Election Center as it posts them and write about each district race once every community in it has posted its complete unofficial count.
Label: Reported by us, from the town's posted records.
Notes
Every town count comes from that community's own posted unofficial tally, listed below, as South Coast 360 saved it when it appeared between 9:08 p.m. Tuesday and 7:09 a.m. Wednesday, and we reopened each file Wednesday morning. The AP calls and statewide counts are the AP's, as WBUR's results pages and their data published them at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. WBUR's page showed the governor and Senate calls by its 9:05 p.m. Tuesday update, and its data time-stamps the question calls between 11:33 p.m. Tuesday and 1:47 a.m. Wednesday, and South Coast 360 calls no race. The comparisons of the posted towns with the statewide count, the closest-count note and the 17,973-vote gap on Question 7 are our own reading of those figures and are labeled that way. Names and parties are as the ballots print them, district boundaries are from the 2021 state redistricting acts, and we checked each date and weekday against a calendar. Not heard: this story reports the counts and includes no candidate statements.
