How we report results

Every vote count on this page is a city or town clerk's or election office's unofficial count, as posted or read aloud on a public broadcast, credited with the time we read it. Our desk saves a copy of each posting, and a second editor checks every number against that copy before each update. On election night we print vote counts only, never percentages. Late mail ballots are counted after Election Day, so totals can change until results are certified.

South Coast 360 states its own result in a race or question only when every community in it has posted its complete unofficial tally. Where a contest reaches past the South Coast, our table adds only the 16 communities we cover and is labeled that way; a full district or statewide total comes only from the Secretary of the Commonwealth or from every community's own clerk. When The Associated Press calls a race or a ballot question, we report the call in the text, credited to the AP with the time of the call, and it never changes the clerks' counts in our tables. Every candidate's concession or victory statement runs in the candidate's own words, with the time.

Ballots still to count: Under state law, mail ballots postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 3, and received by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, are counted. Freetown counts its eligible late mail ballots Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:05 p.m. Fall River counts its outstanding mail ballots in public Saturday, Nov. 7, at 9 a.m. Marion holds its post-election tabulation Monday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. in the Town Clerk's Office, if one is needed. Taunton's election night results do not include hand-counted ballots, write-in votes or most provisional ballots; the city updates its count Nov. 4 to 10, holds its post-election tabulation Thursday, Nov. 12, at 8:30 a.m. and certifies its results Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m.

Mattapoisett counts its early and absentee ballots on Election Day at a central tabulation facility at Old Hammondtown School.

Notes

Every count is a clerk's or election office's unofficial count, as posted or read aloud on a public broadcast. Our desk reads each posting, saves a copy with the time, and a second editor checks every number against that copy before the page updates. No count comes from another news outlet.
