Apponequet is 8-0 a year after going 2-9, and its 21 seniors have a playoff game to show for it. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the No. 10 Lakers from Lakeville and Freetown open the MIAA Division 5 tournament at No. 7 Foxborough, kicking off at 6 p.m. at Martinelli Field at Ahern Middle School. The game moved up a day from the Friday date first listed; the MIAA's bracket and both schools' schedules now show Thursday.

Senior Joe Procaccini leads all of Division 5 with 28 touchdowns, the Boston Globe reported in its playoff preview, and the Globe picked the trip to Foxborough as the best first-round matchup in the division. Apponequet won every game by at least eight points and outscored its opponents 261-125, and it is one of three unbeaten teams in the 16-team bracket, with No. 1 Shawsheen (7-0) and No. 3 Watertown (8-0), by the MIAA's seed list.

From 0-7 to 8-0

A year ago the Lakers lost their first seven games and finished 2-9, scoring 164 points and allowing 319, by their 2025 MaxPreps schedule, and missed the tournament, Nemasket Week reported. Procaccini and quarterback Paxton Canessa were juniors on that team. Six games into that season, coach Zane Fyfe told Nemasket Week what kept the group together. "Sticking together. All the guys believe in each other, and they all get along great. They're always pushing for one another," Fyfe said. "You have got to rely on all 11 guys working together as a unit to get things done."

This fall Fyfe, in his 12th season with a 49-65 career record coming in, had 56 players, 21 of them seniors, the first time in a decade the program had topped 50, according to the Globe's preseason preview. "Last year, if somebody got injured it was like musical chairs," he told the Globe. "But this year, we're two [players] deep at least in every position. So it's a good problem to have, there's a lot of mouths to feed." The Lakers run the Wing T and play their home games on the grass at Griffith Field. The Globe listed talent at the skill positions and depth as the team's strengths and an offensive line short on experience as its question mark. Eight wins and 261 points later, that line has blocked for the division's touchdown leader.

The season, game by game

It started Sept. 11 with a 21-13 win at Middleborough. A week later, at home against Falmouth, Paxton Canessa found his younger brother, Beckett Canessa, for a 75-yard touchdown, the longest touchdown pass of the night in the Globe's Friday roundup, and the Lakers won 19-8. On Sept. 25 they won 37-16 at Seekonk, a night the Globe later counted as the first of Procaccini's two straight five-touchdown games.

Procaccini scored all five touchdowns in a 34-24 home win over Dartmouth on Oct. 2, including runs of 39 and 43 yards and a 53-yard catch. That gave him 14 touchdowns after four games, already the most in Division 5, the Globe reported. A week later he ran for four more, including scoring runs of 41 and 44 yards, in a 48-21 win over Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech. Paxton Canessa threw four touchdown passes that night, and Standard-Times readers voted him their SouthCoast Player of the Week with 83% of the vote, the paper reported.

Somerset Berkley fell 33-8 on Oct. 15, with Procaccini scoring on runs of 2, 90 and 27 yards. On Oct. 22 at Bishop Stang he ran for touchdowns of 20, 28 and 33 yards and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Canessa, who also threw a 13-yard score to Beckett, in a 35-15 win. Kicker Garrett Butler made three extra points that night, the Standard-Times reported.

The regular season ended Oct. 30 with a 34-20 win at Dighton-Rehoboth. Procaccini scored on runs of 57, 35 and 9 yards and added an interception and a fumble recovery on defense, Canessa threw 15-yard touchdown passes to Beckett and to Henry Svirtunas, and Butler added four extra points, the Standard-Times reported. Apponequet and Fairhaven both finished their regular seasons perfect, the paper noted.

Add it up and the Lakers averaged about 32.6 points a game, won four games by 20 points or more (Seekonk, Greater New Bedford, Somerset Berkley and Stang) and went 4-0 at Griffith Field and 4-0 on the road, by the scores on the schedule the school posts. The closest call was the opener, an eight-point win at Middleborough.

Joe Procaccini's 28

Procaccini is a senior running back who also plays safety. He played only six games as a junior because of injuries and still averaged better than 5 yards a carry, the Globe noted in its preseason preview, and it expected him to carry the load this fall. His touchdown total climbed all fall: 18 touchdowns after five games, the Globe reported, and 21 touchdowns plus three two-point conversions through six, the most on the South Coast, by the Standard-Times count. Four more at Stang and three at Dighton-Rehoboth brought him to 28, the most in Division 5 going into the playoffs.

His 28 touchdowns and at least four two-point conversions, three through six games and one at Stang, come to at least 176 points, about two of every three points Apponequet scored this season, by our count from the Globe and Standard-Times figures. He has scored from 90, 57 and 55 yards out, and he scored at least three touchdowns in each of his last five games, from Dartmouth on.

The Globe named him one of its Players of the Week three times this fall, after the Dartmouth, Greater New Bedford and Bishop Stang games, and the Globe's Schools Insider singled him out again after Stang for breaking that game open. He is on the Standard-Times readers' ballot for Player of the Week once more this week, and the paper put him on its ballot for SouthCoast midseason offensive player of the year in October.

The Canessa brothers

Paxton Canessa is in his third season as the starting quarterback. Going into last season the Globe wrote that he had taken huge strides in the offseason, and this preseason Fyfe told the Globe his quarterback had "been spot on with his throws" in practice. Through the 6-0 start Canessa had thrown 11 touchdown passes, the Standard-Times reported. He threw two more at Stang and two more at Dighton-Rehoboth by the paper's game reports, at least 15 for the season by our count of those figures.

Beckett Canessa has caught touchdown passes of 75, 13 and 15 yards from his older brother this fall, by the Globe and Standard-Times reports. Both brothers have been voted the Standard-Times' SouthCoast Player of the Week this season, the paper's ballot page shows.

Apponequet's defense and supporting cast

The Globe's preseason look said the defense had speed at all three levels, led by junior linebacker Troy Cavallo, defensive end Braedyn Marshall and Procaccini at safety. Apponequet held five of its eight opponents to 16 points or fewer and allowed 125 points all season, about 15.6 a game. Only Dartmouth, Greater New Bedford and Dighton-Rehoboth scored more than 16.

On offense, Henry Svirtunas caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Canessa at Dighton-Rehoboth, joining Beckett Canessa and Procaccini among the Lakers with touchdown catches in this season's published game reports. Kicker Garrett Butler made seven extra points over the last two games, three at Stang and four at Dighton-Rehoboth, by the Standard-Times count.

The seniors' last run

For the seniors, Thursday starts the last stretch of high school football: the playoffs, then the Thanksgiving game at Old Rochester on Thursday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. at David S. Hagan Stadium. Fyfe has spoken about what that finish means. "Everybody remembers their last Thanksgiving day game," he told Nemasket Week after the 2023 game. "For most people it's the last time they ever put on a pair of pads, it's the last time you're ever with this group of guys [you have] spent countless hours with ... That bond is special, you don't get it anywhere else."

Apponequet won that Thanksgiving game three years running, 22-3 in 2022, 36-21 in 2023 and 26-14 in 2024, by Nemasket Week's reports and High School Football America's scores, before Old Rochester won it 47-8 last fall. Apponequet went into last year's game with 24 Thanksgiving wins in the series to Old Rochester's 19, Nemasket Week reported.

How long it has been

The last time Apponequet played in the Round of 16, in 2023, the No. 13 Lakers lost 30-6 at No. 4 Dedham, the Globe reported. Their last tournament win came in 2022, when the No. 7 Lakers beat Triton 41-13 in the first round, then lost 40-0 at No. 2 North Reading, by High School Football America's scores and Local Headline News.

That 2022 team also won the South Coast Conference title, beating Old Rochester 22-3 on Thanksgiving, Nemasket Week reported. It came a year after Fyfe's first league title, the South Coast Conference Blue championship in 2021, which the Globe called the program's first conference title since 2014. The MIAA's championship program records an Apponequet Super Bowl trip in 1997, a 35-0 Division 4B loss to Norwell.

What Foxborough brings

Foxborough is 4-4, went 1-3 in the Hockomock League and has lost its last two games, by its MaxPreps schedule. Coach Jack Martinelli is in his 45th season and came into the year with 325 wins, the Globe reported, and the field the Lakers will play on has carried his name since 2017, Patch reported. The MIAA's championship program lists five Foxborough Super Bowl titles, in 1987, 1988, 1991, 2006 and 2023, the last a 48-21 win over Hanover for the Division 5 crown, and a 14-0 loss to Shawsheen in the 2024 final. The Globe called them a perennial contender and one of the division's sleepers.

Last fall Foxborough went 9-4, by its MaxPreps schedule, beating Norton 41-13, Gloucester 28-0 and Archbishop Williams 31-0 on the way to its third straight state final, which it lost 14-7 to Shawsheen Valley Tech on Dec. 5. It also lost on Thanksgiving to Mansfield, 13-10.

The Warriors opened with a 41-14 loss to Tewksbury, by their MaxPreps schedule, then won three straight: 22-21 in overtime against Walpole, after converting a fourth and 13 and tying the game with 10.4 seconds left; 43-6 at Putnam Vo-Tech; and 35-14 at Old Rochester, where they trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter and scored the last 35 points, the Globe reported of both comebacks. That is the only loss on Old Rochester's schedule. Foxborough lost 28-7 at Canton, won 28-7 at Oliver Ames, then lost to King Philip, 35-14, and North Attleborough, 21-13. It has scored 176 points and allowed 173, and it is 3-1 on the road and 1-3 at home, where Thursday's game is played.

Quarterback Brayden Jones, a senior who transferred from Attleboro, and senior running back and linebacker Jack Taft have combined for 14 touchdowns, and Jackson Bohlen and Caiden Dunn have combined for four interceptions, the Globe reported. Dunn, a sophomore, intercepted three passes against Oliver Ames, and Taft, one of the Globe's preseason players to watch in Division 5, scored the 2-yard touchdown in overtime against Walpole. Taft has carried Foxborough in the playoffs before: as a junior last fall, filling in for the injured Ryan Foley, he had 109 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns in the 31-0 semifinal win over Archbishop Williams, the Globe reported. Nick Hardiman ran for two touchdowns at Old Rochester, where Jones threw scoring passes to Kameron Rice and Chris Campbell, the Globe reported. Foxborough runs a multiple offense on grass, and before the season the Globe listed depth at the skill positions as its strength and an inexperienced defense as its concern.

Taft (No. 24), Kameron Rice, Bohlen (No. 7), Joshua Hindin (No. 44), Brendan Watts (No. 70), Joseph Lombardi (No. 11) and Maximus Thorsell are the Warriors' captains, the Foxboro Reporter wrote. The preseason roster Foxborough posted on MaxPreps lists Hindin as a nose guard and guard, Watts as a tackle and Hardiman (No. 8) as a running back and safety. The Globe's preseason preview called special teams a strength, with senior kicker Andrew Higgins (No. 6), senior punter Cam Russo (No. 59) and slot receiver and kick returner Rice back.

The two teams also share an opponent from Foxborough's 2025 playoff path. Foxborough beat Archbishop Williams 31-0 in the 2025 Division 5 semifinal round, and Apponequet lost 36-14 at Archbishop Williams in September 2025, by both teams' MaxPreps schedules. The two teams did not play each other in either of the last two seasons, and they have never met in a state final.

The per-game figures, streak totals and Apponequet's touchdown-pass count are our math from the published scores and the outlets' figures.

Our read on the matchup

This is our analysis. Apponequet brings the better record and the better numbers: 10.6 more points a game than Foxborough and 6.0 fewer allowed, with every win by at least eight. Foxborough brings the harder schedule and the playoff record. Three of its four losses came to Hockomock League teams, and Martinelli's teams have played for the Division 5 title three straight years, beating Gloucester, a possible Round of 8 opponent for the winner, 28-0 on the way last fall.

The game likely turns on whether Foxborough can keep the Wing T from wearing it down. Apponequet's offense leans on misdirection and Procaccini, who has scored from 90 yards out, so a defense that has allowed 21.6 points a game has to tackle in space and keep him from the long run. On the other side, Foxborough's points come through Jones and Taft, and an Apponequet defense that allowed more than 16 points only three times will try to make the Warriors drive the field.

Thursday night: time, tickets, bracket

Kickoff is 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Martinelli Field at the John J. Ahern Middle School, 111 Mechanic St., Foxborough, by the MIAA bracket, the schedule Apponequet posts on Arbiter Live and the school's own address listing. The MIAA sells tickets for every game from the Round of 16 on only online, through GoFan, and every ticket is general admission. A Round of 16 football ticket costs $9.40 with fees included, and a Round of 8 ticket $11.50, by the MIAA's tournament price list.

Buy tickets on the GoFan page for Apponequet at Foxborough, the event both teams' MaxPreps schedules link, or start from the MIAA's tournament ticketing page.

The MIAA has licensed the tournament's streaming and TV rights to the NFHS Network, it says on its media page. Replays of the opener at Middleborough and four Apponequet home games, against Falmouth, Dartmouth, Greater New Bedford and Somerset Berkley, are linked on the Lakers' MaxPreps schedule.

The winner moves on to the Round of 8 against No. 2 Gloucester or No. 15 Blackstone Valley RVT, who play Friday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at Newell Stadium in Gloucester, according to the MIAA's Division 5 bracket. Gloucester senior Cole Mosley-Wynn plays quarterback and linebacker, with 419 rushing yards and 81 tackles, the Globe reported. The Globe made top seed Shawsheen, riding a state-best 34-game win streak and chasing a third straight Super Bowl, the clear favorite in the division. New Bedford coach Robert Lomp, whose Whalers play Friday at Springfield Central in Division 1 by the MIAA's bracket, once coached Apponequet, the Globe's preseason preview noted.

What it means for Lakeville and Freetown

Thursday is the program's first Round of 16 game since 2023, and a win would be its first tournament win since 2022. It could also bring a playoff game to Lakeville. The higher seed hosts through the Round of 8, the MIAA said when it released the brackets, so if Apponequet wins and No. 15 Blackstone Valley upsets Gloucester, the No. 10 Lakers would play the next round at Griffith Field. A Gloucester win would send them to Newell Stadium.

The seniors also have one more date at Hagan Stadium on Thanksgiving morning, against an Old Rochester team whose only loss this fall came against Foxborough. Apponequet and Old Rochester are both 3-0 in the South Coast Conference Blue going into that game, by both schools' schedules.

Thursday's final will be on the Friday Night Scoreboard, and every South Coast playoff game is in our bracket story.
