Marion's Department of Public Works begins rebuilding the Front Street sidewalks on Monday, Oct. 19, and crews will crack-seal 14 town roads Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 20 to 22, according to notices the town posted Oct. 16.

Front Street

Contractor Hatch Landscape and Design Inc. will rebuild the sidewalks from 182 Front St. to Vine Street. Work starts on the stretch between Cottage Street and 182 Front St., then moves to the section between Cottage and Vine streets.

Crews will work 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The town expects the job to be done by Thanksgiving, weather permitting.

About 200 feet of sidewalk will be closed to walkers at a time. While crews are working, the traffic lane next to that section will close too, and police details will wave cars through the open lane one direction at a time.

The town asks drivers not to park along Front Street during the project. Parking there will be limited, and the notice points drivers to the Island Wharf Road lot. Driveways will stay open, with short delays possible.

Crack sealing

Paving contractor Indus will seal cracks Oct. 20 to 22 on these roads: Benson Brook Road, Parlowtown Road, Holmes Road, Water Street, Ryders Lane, Pleasant Street, South Street, School Street, Ridgewood Lane, Giffords Corner Road, Abels Way, Joanne Drive, Jenna Drive and the Evergreen Cemetery roadway.

Crack sealing fills pavement cracks with a mix of asphalt cement and reinforcing fibers to keep a street from breaking down faster, the town said. Work will start no earlier than 7 a.m. and wrap up around 3 p.m. The town asks residents not to park on those roads while crews are there.

Both schedules can change with the weather, the town said. Questions go to the DPW at 508-748-3540, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. After hours, call Marion police at 508-748-1212.

How we verified this

Every fact comes from two Town of Marion News Flash notices posted Oct. 16, listed below. We read both on the town's website on Oct. 17, kept dated copies and read them again late that morning; neither had changed. A third notice, about final paving set for Saturday, Oct. 17, is not used here: the town had posted no new date for that work when we checked. We recomputed every weekday by script and checked each claim against the notices. A human editor approved the story. Not heard: no one was contacted.
